Was Napoleon A Muslim?
#1

i found this article on the net:

Napoleon Bonaparte embraced Islam?

England's foe for many years has been France. The legacy remains as seen in the Capital of England, London, where monuments dedicated to defeats over France, are evident. The defeats have been most significant against that of when France was being ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte. (Nelson's Column, Trafelgar Square, Waterloo Station to name but a few.)

Yet, history is seldom seen in the truthful light, and is nearly always partial to the 'winning side' - in whose hand the pen remains, long after both the battle and the war have been won. Yet, recent discoveries have seemed to suggest some interesting facts about Napoleon and his religious beliefs.

In the book, ‘Satanic Voices - Ancient and Modern’ by David M. Pidcock, (1992 ISBN: 1-81012-03-1), it states on page 61, that the then official French Newspaper, Le Moniteur, carried the accounts of his conversion to Islam, in 1798 C.E.

It mentions his new Muslim name, which was ‘Aly (Ali) Napoleon Bonaparte’. He commends the conversion of his General Jacques Menou, who became known as General ‘Abdullah-Jacques Menou’, who later married an Egyptian, Sitti Zoubeida - who was descended from the line of the Prophet Muhammad (on whom be peace).

Napoleon did recognise the superiority of the Islamic (Shari'ah) Law - and did attempt to implement this in his Empire. Most of this, as one can imagine, has been removed/replaced by modern-day secular laws in France and other parts of Europe, but some aspects of the Islamic (Shari'ah) Law do currently exist in French constitution as the basis for some of their laws from the Code Napoleone. One publicised case was that of the fatal car accident with Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Al-Fayed. "The photographers were charged with an old part of the French Jurisprudence, for ‘not helping at the scene of an accident’- which is taken from the Shari'ah Law of Imam Malik." (David M. Pidcock, 1998 C.E.)

Further detailed accounts of this can be found in the book 'Napoleon And Islam' by C. Cherfils. ISBN: 967-61-0898-7

yeah Dan u were seemed so repulsed by the idea that Napoleon was Hazam's hero. I don't know if Hazam realises that Napoleon reverted to Islam. I think that it would be a good idea to do some research on this topic and start informing muslims about this fact.

Wassalam.

don't believe me Hazam, do ur own research. I am not sure about this myself that is why I posed this question. Besides, The first time I heard about this was on a BBC Radio statio in UK, on a reputable program, and it was from a non-muslim historian, I don't remember his name sorry.

And ofcourse everything is to do with Islam in the life of a muslim, that is our life ISLAM and praise be to ALlah that it is. I think that it is good to highlight when famous people are known to have converted to Islam not because they are great role models because only Allah know what kind of muslims they are but because of the very fact that they are famous, it will make a lot of non-muslims sit up and take notice. Because they knew these people as one like them and they chose to be a muslim and hopefully they would be curious as to why? and then if they decide to research Islam then they would be convinced of its truth. So peopl like Mohammad Ali, Cat Stevens (Yousaf Islam), I even heard Neal Armstrong the astronaut although I am not sure about him ,mite be just a rumour and yes ofcourse Napoleon.

The reason I picked on Napoleon was because when u said in another thread that Napoleon was ur heo some people were a bit surprised why and i just thought it was an interesting fact that Napoleon reverted to Islam, well it would be if it was true. SO since u r into getting ur facts right, find out for this forum please [Image: smile.gif]

Just because Napolean MIGHT be a muslim, does not mean that I have to like him, though. It would be a historical fun fact but that's about it for me. There have been many horrible characters in history (and present) who claim to be muslim. It is only a title until one proves the belief with deeds.

salams bro Dan

Lets not forget the advice given by Sr Radiyah on another thread where she said we shouldn't judge other muslims, besides I am not advocating that anyone should like Napoleon , I explained in my 2nd last message why I thought it might be useful to know such facts. Ofcourse whatever Napoleon did before he turned to islam, after coming to the deen, if he did so, he would be like a new born baby.

Besides anybody who comes back to Islam is a hero in my books, they give me so much inspiration because I wonder if I was in their place would I have had the wisdom, the courage to leave everything I knew all my life and recognise Islam and adopt it. Ofcurse its Allah who guides. But you know sometimes I think being born in a muslim family makes mea so lazy and I have lost a lot of years because of it where I have been away from the deen in practical terms.

Anyways, so I guess even you Bro Dan and Sister Jennifer and people like you on this forum and else where are my heroes too [Image: smile.gif]
