French Deny Visa Over Head Scarf

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations challenged France's denial of a visa to a Bangladeshi Muslim woman because she refused to remove her head scarf to have her photograph taken.

On Monday the woman reported that she was unable to attend a business conference in Paris over the weekend because the French Consulate in Houston wouldn't let her wear her Islamic head scarf in her visa photograph.

"This policy would in effect ban any Muslim woman who wears Islamic attire from entering France for any reason," Najat Elsayed, spokeswoman for the Houston chapter of the council, said Thursday.

Veronique Lhemenn, spokeswoman for the French Consulate in Houston, said French law forbids any attire from obscuring the view of a person in a photograph for a visa. The law applies to all visa applicants of any religion, she said.

To what other religion would this apply? Sikh?

Can't go to France? Big loss. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

What do you expect? How can identify someone if their face is covered?

You can tell me all day long about the humility involved etc. but in the end, a passport is a means of identification, and not being able to identify someone puts other passengers all at risk.

Phat they are talking about a head cover not a face cover, and any way, I think France will have to consider this soon, becaus Sobhan Allah, a large number of Muslim tourists go there every year, they will make a huge loss of national income. True Dan, no big deal Alhamdulelah.

Dan, you seem to believe that the Hijab is mandatory. Can you show me how this is so? Much of my reading has said that it is not.

I still don't understand why women that follow the ways of Islam have to wear a head scarf. It puzzles me.
