Zabeehah chicken = Halaal chicken???

:assalam:

dear brothers and sisters.

I have been thinking for a long time on this issue now. Are animals that are inherently halaal (such as chicken and lamb) still fit for consumption after they have been fed animal products. Many farms all over the world use animal waste products (even feaces!) to add protein to the feed. This obviously results in healthier poultry = more meat to sell!

Now the opinions of many scholars that i have come across vary on this matter.

According to scholars of Hanafiyah madhab, such as Mufti Ibrahim Desai of South Africa:

<i>"To buy or sell feed that contains impurities such as feaces, feathers, meltdown of dogs and cats, blood, brains and the spinal cords of cows, etc. is not permissible nor is it permissible to provide animals such feed. However, if the animals have been fed with such feed and that has been their staple diet, it will be permissible to consume the meat of such animals with the condition that the meat does not give off any bad odour."</i>

But I have heard Dr. Zakir Naik say that animals that are fed on meat are not halaal in islam. (Or something similar to this end) during one of his lectures.

According to SOUNDVISION (a famous islamic website) Dr. Ahmad Sakr,
professor emeritus of Food Science and author of "Understanding Halal Food" and "A Muslim Guide to Food Ingredients" is of the opinion that, <i>"Halal is Halal if the following conditions are taken into consideration" The first is that the animal is itself is Halal. That means no pork, for instance.</i>

The second, is that the food the animal consumes does not contain any blood or meat. Sakr explains that the animal has to be herbivorous to be Halal, and adds that an animal becomes Haram if it consumes blood and /or meat.

The first question that we must ask is that is there any information regarding this matter in the Holy Qura'an and the Sunnah of Sayyidina RasoolULLAH :saws2: ?

Would anyone who has knowledge on this matter like to elaborate?

I was very occupied with the same issue last year and i even tried to organize an informal campagin using neighbours, colleagues, relatives in order to raise awareness on one hand and put pressure on gov on the other to ban this practice. I started with contacting Fatwa committee and a brother sought fatwa from two knowlegable scholars working in his neighbourhood. According to those fatwas, it is only makrouh. But I m ready to reactivate the issue because this involves our diet and Allah Encourages us to eat Tayeb and the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam also said one who eats Tayeb shall be among those whose supplications are fulfilled.

Weclome to the board and jazakum Allah khairan for this post.

dear muslimah

You said you have sought fatwa regarding this matter. I would like to know which school of thought those ulemaa belong to. I think the salafis are of the opinion that it is not halaal, whereas other schools of thought such as the hanafis regard it as makrouh.

I do not intend any sectarianism. I merely want to know what different opinions exist among the ahlul sunnah wal jamaah, and which opinion is backed up by the strongest evidence from the Quran and Sunnah of RasoolULLAH :saws2:

Actually, I mailed the Egyptian Fatwa committe on this site and they emailed me back with the reply. Thus, I gues this should be a Hanafi based opinion.

Assalamualaikum wa RahmatULLAH sister,

Is this the same as Al-Azhar University? I am not sure whether to trust their (Jamia' Al-Azhar's) fatwas as I have heard they have given fatwas that legalize ribaa'!

Also, I think the need is to identify the Quranic or sunnah-based information on this matter. Is there any AYAH or HADITH-e-NABWI (SAAW) that prohibits the consumption of animals that have fed on other animals/meat?

Please dont misquote the fatwa, if u read the fatwa from jamia al azhar , u will realise they havent legalised ribaa , the fatwa only allows givin away the ribaa money one has in his possession to charity , with no intention of reward.

With regards to halam meat , one should follow the instruction guidance of ones own countries halal monitoiring country, who do extensive research and investigation to find out if what we eat is halal, and they are scholars who do the investigation.

On the contrary, I highly encourage you starting your own thread, knowing where you were I love others to share the experience.

Back to topic, I guess the brother when he talked about legalising Riba, he was refering to the Fatwa regarding Bank interest. However, I must say that the Imam in order to pass this Fatwa (according to his declaration on the newspapers), he said that bankers and other financial experts provided him with full info regarding the whole process. Based on studying this, he passed his Fatwa.
