HEROES & PIONEERS / Amr Khaled/ The Time Magazine

Quote:Amr Khaled is not a household name in the West. But for a segment of the Islamic world, the 39-year-old Egyptian is a rock star. At a time when conservative clerics have become primary arbiters of power, Khaled, a layman, has one of the Arab world's most popular websites; regular shows on Iqra, a Saudi-owned religious satellite channel; and an influence that prompts comparisons with everyone from Dr. Phil to Pat Robertson. But Khaled may be most like Rick Warren, who has built an empire around his "purpose driven life" philosophy. Khaled's model, "life makers," encourages Muslims to implement action plans for transforming their lives and communities through Islam. It also urges them to get along peacefully with the West.
What really put Khaled on the world stage was his decision to host an interfaith conference in Copenhagen in March 2006, after the controversies over the Danish cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad. Muslim clerics criticized him for extending an olive branch to the Danes. But Khaled didn't back down. An accountant by training who favors Hugo Boss shirts and designer suits, he maintains some traditional views—he believes women should wear headscarves, for example—but Khaled is a needed voice for moderation from within the Muslim world. "[Osama] bin Laden is saying he is talking on behalf of Muslims," he says. "Who asked him to talk on behalf of us? Nobody."

I dont like this trend of calling people to the deen by enticing them with haram entertainment. They claim to be 'moderate' but what is permissible and what is not is clear, how do we call people to Islam using music and dance?

Amr Khaled's address on its own is more than enough, no need to mix it with such things and perhaps lose the blessing and rewards in it.

May Allah guide us all and help us to become better Muslims, Ameen.

I concur Jennifer, Sobhan Allah, some of the individuals who are really influencial laterly are trying to come closer to the West using their own means to convey a message O see we can be like u. Without mentioning names, I was watching a TV interview with a head of an Islamic foundation who reported that they used lottery during an event held in a Western country to invite non muslims to come to Egypt. how can I tell them later on that lottery is Haram?

Native Deen group never use music instruments, their songs are very meaningful and its all about Islam, so what is the harm?

Asalaamu alikum brother,

Sure they use instruments, you can hear it right on their home page. You dont think "Islamic hip-hop" is an oxymoron? Whats next? Halal pork???

Why do we try to appeal to the west by imitating what they do, when what we have is greater? I think if we truly have pride in ourselves and our deen we wont resort to these tactics. We just dont need to. I also dont see that they are effective, rather they just obscure the light of Islam.

To be honest with you sister, I am not against using music when we sing for Allah, otherwise, we should not watch any Islamic movies like “the Message” because it has some music in it.

The purpose for bringing Native Deen during Amr Khaled's visit to USA, in my opinion to break any barrier between Non Muslim audience and the Muslims on the stage, and to give an idea to Non Muslims that we are also normal people, using accessible language, fashionable and religious at the same time; why cant we listen to music and go out and have fun while still wearing the veil and and observing our religous duties as Muslims?

Of course this is not an argument with you sister, this is only my opinion and jazaki Allahu khiran for your input.

wa alykom as salam Wael, this is exactly where the porblem lies. Being Muslims is enough, we dont need to show the west that we are like them, because we are not. Being a normal muslim certainly differs totally with any normal non muslim in each and every aspect. Fashion is not part of our Deen. I dont have to follow fashion to show ohters that I m like them. I just have to follow what Allah Commands. In my humble opinion, if we work on this ground our voices will be stronger, because we will not have to be torn between trying to fit in and applying our Deen.

Jazki Allahu Khiran sister Muslimah for your view, but I’ve got some comments.

We are not imitating the West by singing some Islamic songs, nor do we imitate them by being fashionable and not going against our Deen, what is the problem if I wear a nice suit with tie and preach Islam like how Amr Khaled appear? and as you may know, his voice was heard ,and reached the hearts of millions mash a Allah, Arabs and non Arabs, Muslims and non Muslims. Amr Khaled’s simple message is to integrate with the Westerners without dissolving or losing our identity as Muslims.

Amr Khaled once said:

Quote:Let me say this to the Western countries; you can’t enforce your culture on me and then expect me to coexist. You can’t enforce our youth to be a carbon copy of your own culture, and then ask us to coexist. You can’t occupy our country, and then ask us to coexist. We are calling for coexistence between two parties who respect each other’s wishes. ……I want all the youths to be proud of their identity. So coexist but never forget your roots. You have a global mission. You will be open to the whole world, yet proud of your own Muslim identity.

He never imitates the West, he only knew the way to explain Islam to them, he knew the way to reach their hearts and that’s why he was heard and respected by them. I just saw him on an interview before leaving to America where he said that “I am not going there for the award, but God has given me a chance to explain to the Americans what is Islam and I must seize the chance” he will also meet Jennifer Lopez and Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks etc… shall we also be against that? He even said that if he gets the chance he will talk to them, sit with them and try to clarify the misconceptions that the have about Islam and our prophet pbuh. in my opinion, this is a great mission.

Please view this page to read an open discussion with Amr Khaled on IOL before leaving to USA and to know more about his opinion on imitating the West. Amr Khaled on IslamOnline

am so happy that we are trying hard to advise each other in order to become better Muslims. May Allah reward you all.

Of course we should be over concerned for one another. And as u may know I have nothing against Amr Khaled, or those who wear suits. That was not what i meant. I thought u understood this. What i meant is following fashion in general just to fit in with the west. If we will take examples, Bilala Philips, Khaled Yaseen are in Jilbab and Mash a Allah well heard and communicative. What I meant was a general comment. His lecture was more than enought, it does not have to be followed by a Hip hop something. I mean just look at the name. Watching a movie on your own at home is totally different from making a hip hop band part of a Dawa event. May be now u got my point. We really need to be very careful in how we introduce Islam. That is all dear brother.
