Ask a Shia
:assalam: ,

May Allah shower His peace and blessings on all of you. I have seen many misconceptions of the Shia on this forum. As a practising Shia I would like to make clear our beliefs. Feel free to ask any questions about us I will not be offended.

Quote:Administrative Note (August 2026)

From the perspective of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, the most significant doctrinal differences between Twelver Shi'ism and Sunni Islam are as follows:

The Imamate: Twelver Shi'ites believe that the Imamate is a fundamental pillar of the religion and that Allah explicitly appointed the twelve Imams by name. In contrast, Sunnis regard the Caliphate (leadership of the Muslim community) as a matter of governance and public affairs, not a pillar of faith.

The Infallibility of the Imams: Twelver Shi'ites believe that the Imams are infallible, protected from sin, error, and forgetfulness. Sunnis maintain that infallibility is reserved for the Prophets in conveying Allah's revelation.

Religious Authority: Twelver Shi'ites regard the teachings of the infallible Imams as divinely authoritative and legally binding. Sunnis hold that religious legislation is derived exclusively from the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The Companions of the Prophet: Sunnis believe that all the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ are worthy of respect and generally upright in character. Twelver Shi'ite literature contains strong criticism of many leading Companions, and its scholars hold that a number of them deviated after the Prophet's death in the matter of the Imamate.

Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Sunnis honor Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and affirm her innocence as declared in the Qur'an (Surah An-Nur). Twelver Shi'ite sources include narrations and statements criticizing her, particularly regarding her role in the Battle of the Camel, and they generally do not accord her the same level of reverence as Sunnis.

Loyalty and Dissociation (al-Wala' wa al-Bara'): Twelver Shi'ites place special emphasis on loyalty to the Imams and dissociation from those who opposed them as part of religious belief. Sunnis understand loyalty and dissociation primarily in terms of faith and disbelief while maintaining love and respect for all the Companions.

The Return (al-Raj'ah): Twelver Shi'ites believe that certain believers and disbelievers will return to earthly life before the Day of Judgment. Sunnis do not accept this belief except in the specific miraculous cases established by authentic revelation.

The Mahdi: Twelver Shi'ites believe that the Mahdi is Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-'Askari, the twelfth Imam, who was born in the third Islamic century and remains alive in occultation. Sunnis believe in the coming of the Mahdi near the end of time but generally do not believe that he has already been born and is presently in occultation.

Taqiyyah (Religious Dissimulation): Sunnis recognize the permissibility of concealing one's faith only in cases of coercion as established in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Twelver Shi'ites apply the concept of taqiyyah more broadly in various situations involving fear or significant hardship.

The Qur'an: Sunnis believe that the Qur'an in the hands of Muslims today is the complete and perfectly preserved Word of Allah, protected from any addition or omission, in accordance with Allah's promise: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will surely preserve it." (Qur'an 15:9). Contemporary Twelver Shi'ite scholars likewise affirm that the present Qur'an is authentic and unaltered. However, some early Shi'ite hadith collections contain reports that have been understood as implying textual alteration. Twelver scholars have differed over these reports, with some rejecting them, others reinterpreting them, and others accepting them. Therefore, it is not accurate to state that belief in Qur'anic corruption is a universally accepted doctrine among Twelver Shi'ites today.

The Names and Attributes of Allah: Sunnis affirm all the Names and Attributes that Allah affirmed for Himself and that His Messenger ﷺ affirmed for Him, without distortion, denial, asking how, or likening Him to His creation. Many Twelver Shi'ite theologians follow a theological approach influenced by classical kalam, interpreting figuratively certain divine attributes—such as Allah's rising over the Throne (istiwa'), His Hand, and His Face—thereby differing from the traditional Sunni (Salafi/Athari) approach to the divine attributes.

What do you say about Abu Bakr and Umar?

Good question. I plan on only replying strictly to the premises of the question. Since this is a sensitive topic I appeal to others to leave their emotions aside.

Regarding Abu Bakr and Umar ibn alKhattab the Shia consider them as fallible human beings who are not above criticism. It wouldnt be an understatement to say that in general there is a great deal of resentment towards some of the actions these two personalities are alleged to have done.

This strictly is then the answer to the question. I have avoided going into details of why, successorship etc etc because that was not part of the question. If anyone wants to know more simply ask.

Bismillah

According to Shia beliefs, how many of the verses in the Qur'an are fabricated and how many do you believe are left out?

thanks for the candor

The Shia believe that the Quran is complete and free from any Tahreef or distortion. As the Quran testifies itself

Surely We have revealed the Reminder and We will most surely be its guardian (15:9)

No falsehood can approach it from before or behind it: It is sent down by One Full of Wisdom, Worthy of all Praise." Al-Quran 41:42

I could quote 100s of Statements and Fatawa given by our Ulema (because every single one of them believes in the completeness of the Quran) but I will suffice with 2. 1 early and 1 contemporary.

"Our belief is that the Quran which Allah revealed to His Prophet

Muhammad is (the same as) the one between the two covers (daffatayn).

And it is the one which is in the hands of the people, and is not

greater in extent than that. The number of surahs as generally

accepted is one hundred and fourteen ...And he who asserts that we say

that it is greater in extent than that, is a liar."

Shi'i reference: Shi'ite Creed (al-I'tiqadat al-Imamiyyah), by Shaykh

Saduq, English version, p77. (cited in al-islam.org)

"From the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) until today, not one word of the Qur'an has been

edited, altered, added, omitted, lost, distorted, or otherwise changed."

(Invitation to Islam by Syed Moustafa al-Qazwini Published by: Islamic Educational Center of Orange County, California cited in al-islam.org)
