AssalmuAlaikum i was away so i missed alot.happy to see the forum.jazakullakhair for sis muslimah for starting .Ramazrn is nearing and let us make a vow to make Ramazan beter than last one.let us ponder over the last Ramazan and the loopholes we did so as to miss the sawab from Allah.o.k(for e.g),l let us ponder, last time i finished only 1 qattam (reading Quran completly)this time l ,ll try to finish atlesat 2 or more.last Ramazan i slept more ok this time with the Help of Allah i,ll try my best to sleep less and do more ibadats. last time my Zakat was not accurate, this time i ,ll get it done properly. and so on.come on learners of Islam.share ur ideas of making a better ramazan. personally i have started recheking my leraned suras to avoid any mistake while praying in Ramazan.a surway done here showed that one of the common mistake people make is that in starting Ayat "bismi"many say nur-raheem instead of nir -raheem.and i want to make more istiqfar so as to erase all my past sins.May Allah fulfil our niyat.Aameen

Hello Everyone. My name is Laura and I have a few questions about Ramadan. If it is okay, then I was wondering if you could all help me to understand a few things better. I have been studying Islam for only a few months and it all seems very complex to me.
I thought I understood that Ramadan was the month of October, but after viewing the replies, I see that it might only be a week away and that it is on the cycle of the moon? Do I understand that correctly?
For fasting, as I understand it.... Fasting occurs between sunup and sundown? Is that correct? Is there a special diet involved?
This is my first posting on your message board, and I might not be posting my next question in the right place, but I have to start somewhere.
Zakat is collected at the end of Ramadan, which represents the yearly alms giving? The 2.5% given is not only from money but can be given in the form of livestock, property, or material and living goods? Is that correct? And can it be given directly to a person in need, or does it have to go through charities?
Please correct me on anything that I say, or elaborate to help me better understand.
Thank you!!

Yep. There are some websites the predict the stages of the moon but are not always 100% accurate so we rely on the teachings of the Prophet saws.
Don't take it the wrong way, but that seems a bit odd. Given how we can predict where Jupiter will be in 15 years and get a satelite to do a fly by, I would have thought we could get a new moon right.

Yes, the Hijri year (the calendar of Muslims commemorates the immigration of the Messenger prayer and peace be upon him from Mecca to medina) caluclates the month according to the moon cycle.

This is correct no special diet

Muslimah -
Thank you for the reply. I am rather new to discussion board ettiquette, and this is my first real attempt at posting on any forum of any kind. I have been studying Islam for a few months (maybe half a year) but I am quickly realizing that all the books and DVD's that aid me cannot compare to the information that I can recieve first hand from you or anyone else on this board. I am here on a scholarly mission to better myself and to expand my education.
I read the first link you gave me, thank you. For some reason I was unable to access the second link you provided for me. The first link provided me a great starting point. Thank you. I am very interested in any and all elaborations. :)
I am wondering if it would be considered wrong if I participated in Ramadan, since I do not practice the Islamic faith? I am dedicated to learning and I am thinking that I would benefit from the experience of Ramadan.
I am not familiar with some of the phrases that are used on this board, but I want to Thank you for the greeting and the reply. I look forward to many enlightening posts.

Praise be to Allah (Alhamdulelah) that the link was useful. Pls feel free without any reservation to use the board, ettiquette on the board comprise that we respect one another. We feel we are a family, so certainly your input is welcomed. It is a good step u took to decided to start posting. And certainly me and all my brothers and sisters are more than ready to provide any info need and help u as much as possible. I tried making it easy, instead of using the 2nd link, use the following individually. Each will take u to a part of a full article on fasting.
If u feel like participating in Ramadan, go ahead, sometimes practice gives a better sense.
There is no problem about it, I mean you are not prohibited to prticipate.
Any further questions pls post them.
