It is <b>not</b> only “Islamicly” that a person could be possessed by devil, even Christianity taught the same. In Christianity, a ceremony used to drive demons out of a person they have possessed. Jesus healed people tormented by evil spirits, casting them out with a word, and his followers later drove out demons “in his name.”

The Christian New Testament includes casting out devils among the miracles performed by Jesus. Because of this example, possession was part of the belief system of Christianity since its beginning, and exorcism is still a recognized practice of Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox and some Protestant sects.

and i will let sister Muslimah and other brothers and sisters to attend on the Isalmic part of casting out devils.

Magic..Witch-craft..seems fascinating. Is there any fictional work on this, Islamically speaking? Like from an author who has an Islamic background?

as salam alykom brother kal,

This area is prohibited for us Muslims to approach, we are commanded to learn how to protect ourselves against it, using what Allah Gave us in Quran and the sunnah.

I understand how can you be fascinated with it, many people get involved out of this feeling. Pls brother dont approach it. I m talking to you out of deep concern. Some people get deceived thinking that this is power and extra skills that one seeks to possess. It is nothing but Shaytan is pulling children of Adam towards shirk. As naseeah confirmed, this problem is quiet pravlent on all strata of the society. Even among some of the devoted Muslims, although they know that seeking help from other than Allah is shirk, they still become infatuated with the idea of having what they think of a Muslim jinn to help them around.

Like do you remember this TV series I love Jenni,, they think that having this Muslim jinn who might tell them who is knocking the door, or who is coming to visit in an hour or ...puts them in a higher position. some even decieve people and let them be convinced that they are Wali (do u know this word). Whereas it is nothing but the work of shyatan.

Thus, since witchcraft is nothing but human beings seeking help of shaytans to do things (that seems miraculous), is a major sin and shirk. We must stay away, we must not be fascinated or tempted to step in.

What you need to learn is to how protect yourself and may Allah protect us and u, if you are inflicted, how to treat yourself.

And in this point in particular, I like to stress that treating oneself is easy and you dont need to approach others for it. Regardless of their devoted appearence. I mean in some cases people may appear devoted to Islam and follow only Islamic teachings whereas they mix it with other Shirkish rituals just exactly as Allah say:

"And (there are) others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a deed that was righteous with another that was evil. Perhaps Allah will turn unto them in forgiveness. Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Quran 9:102)

To you they seem following nothing but Quran and Sunnah, but then without you noticing they just mix up with other things. They might not be even aware that what they are doing is Haram. In some cases, they just inherit such rituals from others and take it as granted and as a gift from Allah.

So in case anyone is inflicted u just need to follow the simple steps yourself and Allah Shall Assist much.

Other than the mention of Muhammad saying to eat dates, this sounds like suggestions someone made up.

Bismillah

salam Shamms

These are not suggestions, this is a hadeeth:

Narrated A`mer Bin Said, that his father may Allah be pleased with him said: The Prophet salla Allah a`lyee wa sallam said: One who eats every morning dates (a`jwa) shall not be harmed by poison or magice on that day till the evening" (reported by Bukhari)

Thus, this is not merely a suggestion, but a prescription given to us by the Messenger, of course u may take it or leave it. Just like any other medication presciption. But why should I leave it and become vulnerable to poison which can be even in the air pollution or witchcraft which I might face any where. Why wouldnt i take the preventive measurements brought by our teacher and leader.

Why we follow his teachings and learn from it:

"And perform the prayer, and give Zakat and <b>obey the Messenger (Muhammad) t</b>hat you may receive mercy (from Allah)." (Quran 24:56)

In many other positions of Quran we are commanded to obey the Messenger which is usually preceded with the command to obey Allah. But in this position, Allah deliberately singled out the obey to the Messenger for this purpose. Is to stress that we must obey him and learn from him.

Now this is interesting. Question: Where in quran or hadith can these steps be found? Other than the mention of Muhammad saying to eat dates, this sounds like suggestions someone made up. Christianity has no such suggestion on what to eat to ward off magic. To go along with this, is it islamicly taught that a muslim can become demon possessed? And if so, what is done to cast out the demon?

Shamms

salam Shamms, I gather from your question that u r looking for the proof in Quran that human beings can become victims of witchcraft and thus under the influence of demons.

Quran say:

"They followed what the devils gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Solomon. Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us)." And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's Leave. And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed they knew that the buyers of " (Quran 2:102). This Ayah stands as a comprehensive explanation of how human beings came in touch with knowledge of magic. It also refers to the effect mankind may suffer which could extend to the separation between a man and his wife. Please note that the Ayah explains that magic dates back to even before Prophet Soliman (the timing is not exactly specified in an indication that it dates back to old ages).

Thus #1: Magic is a temptation and a knowledge that has been introduced to mankind long time ago. We are not exactly sure when.

But just as Quran contained the warning, it also contained the remedy, in other positions Allah Explained what magic may cause such as:

"They would surely say: "[/b]. Nay, we are a people bewitched."

(Quran 15:15)

"And even if We had sent down unto you (O Muhammad) a Message written on paper so that they could touch it with their hands, the disbelievers would have said: "This is nothing but obvious magic!" (Quran 6:7).

And this is the most famous magic ever:

"He [Moses] said: "Throw you (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic." (Quran 6:116)

To be brief, I only brought those examples to present how magic can affect human beings.

But at the same time, Allah brought the remedy as in:

"Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak,

2.

"From the evil of what He has created;

3.

"And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or goes away).

4.

"And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots,"

Insh aAllah I will add more

There's alot to respond to here, so I'll get to it. Wel Mel, while the Bible does teach that "people" can become demon possessed, it however does NOT teach that one who places his faith in Jesus Christ for his salvation can become demon possessed. My question was about muslims, not people in general, becoming possessed. Is it possible for one who places his faith in allah and muhammad as allah's messenger to become possessed? That's what I want to know.

Wel Mel, you also stated

>Are you looking for hadiths reference?<

My question was where in "quran" or "hadith" so yes, I was looking for hadith references...if you have them.

Muslimah you stated

>I gather from your question that u r looking for the proof in Quran that human beings can become victims of witchcraft and thus under the influence of demons.<

No that's not what I was looking for, I already know human beings can fall victim to such things. As stated above I was specifically asking about muslims.

As far as the eating of dates go, I understand that you believe that to be a commandment from Muhammad, like I said, OTHER than that, the rest of what you listed sounds to me like suggestions made by men, not commandments from your prophet. So I wanted to know, where did they come from?

I hope my questions are clearer so that they can be answered.

Alhamdulelah Lord of the Worlds, Creator of the Creation and prayer and peace be upon his Messenger Mohamed Ibn Abdullah.

Matter of fact, after starting to post replies on this issue, I found it would be more beneficial for you Shamms as well as others that we elaborate a bit and put things in order.

Talking about demon possession must be made clear in the sense to differentiate between:

1. Mas (slight touching) = temporary short consequences

2. Witchcraft = sustainable symptoms till Allah Annuls the spell.

As those two inflictions are different in their symptoms and repercussions.

However, let us be more organized and take things step by step to introduce as much info as possible in this regard.

.

Originally, children of Adam have a problem with Satan since the beginning of the creation of humanity. It started between Adam and satan who disobeyed Allah and vowed before Allah to do every possible effort in order to drive the children of Adam astray.

“[iblees (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (humankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.* "Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." (Quran 15:39-40).

“surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path.* "Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them grateful and thankful." (Quran 7:16-17)

As you see that he vowed to drive all of us astray, because he already envied Adam and the children of Adam. Because he knows for sure that he is a lost cause and shall be destined to hell fire.

I don’t want to get off topic, in the 7:17, he vowed to attack from front, back..all sides.

Thus, any human being is susceptible to devilish attacks, what to do in order to protect oneself against this?. Quran say:

“Verily, those who are pious, when an evil thought comes to them from Shaytaan (Satan), they remember (Allah), and (indeed) they then see (aright).” (Quran 7:201)

However, to be more precise, the underlined bolded part, if I want to give a literal translation, I would say touched slightly with a phantom of shaytan. Allah, in this verse described the devil as phantom since we cannt see them, but also Said slightly touched, only touched. The sense of slight touching can be made through thoughts as well. This condition of touching is a temporary one that does not last after taking the necessary counteraction.

Thus, in case those who are pious are slightly touched, much difference, only touched with a phantom of devil, they only need to remember Allah in any form of remembrance. Remembrance of Allah has many forms, prayer, reciting Quran, saying Aoudhbillah mineshaytan arrajeem which is also mentioned in Quran.

This could happen to any Muslim at any time, even during prayer. One during prayer may just get attacked with this which diminishes the deep feeling one must develop during prayer (Khushou`). Matter of fact, since the sole aim of satan is to drive children of Adam astray, then it is only logical that attacks will increase during any act of worship or means to get closer to Allah. In such case which is a common possibility for any muslim to encounter, it is enough to do remembrance. Also in this regard, the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam taught us a set of supplications that we must say every morning and every evening. This set of supplications, when maintained, are sufficient to protect the person from devilish attacks.

Now what is the difference between this and being inflicted with witchcraft?

In case one is inflicted with witchcraft, here the situation is different. One needs to recite more Quran, to use more dua, in order to get rid of it. During the getting rid of the magic spell, which is nothing but using this spell to enable devils into the body of the person, Allah Shall kill those devils. Thus, a human being who is using the prescribed method to annul the witchcraft has nothing to do but to apply. Allah Does everything.

We must keep this in mind. To understand the process, you can just read Surat Falaq;

Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak,

"From the evil of what He has created;"And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or goes away)."And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots” (Quran 113). In a hadeeth, the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam commanded Aaesha to seek refuge to Allah from this Ghaseq which is the moon if entered into darkness. Actually, this is the time when sorcerers become active in making their magic. And as u see magic is nothing but making knots, blowing in them while reading certain spells in order to enable devils have control and influence the victim. In this case, of course still what every the victim does of remembrance and prayer helps to annul this witchcraft, however, he /she needs to read more quran with an intensified level and large numbers in order to be cured. Actually, magic can be very harmful. And as I said, Allah while untying the knots also kills those shaytans.

Thus, in a nutshell, to say how a victim of witchcraft can cast devils out of the body which are enabled in by means of the magic spells. One must use the steps mentioned above, do much dua for Allah to annul the spell and kill those shaytans, and continues to do so till Allah treats him/her fully. One will feel the difference because magic can be really harmful.

Again, I want to stress that even saying Bismillah, shall untie the knots according to hadeeth.

In a hadeeth, narrated Abi Horaira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam, said that shaytan ties on the back of the head of one of you who sleeps three knots, he strikes (in the sense of presses on them) each knot saying may you experience a long night sleep deep. As soon as one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot shall be untied, makes ablution the second will be untied and prays the third will be untied. Thus, one will become fresh and active in the morning, otherwise one will be lazy and distressed” (reported by Bukhari)

As clearly evident from the hadeeth, even a person who is not victim of witchcraft is subject to satanic knots. And what is magic? Nothing but making knots.

Comparing the two cases we derive that:

1. Remembrance of Allah unties satanic knots.

2. Making ablution unties satanic knots

3. Performing prayer unties satanic knots.

Therefore, we can also seek those means of remedy to get rid of the witchcraft. Allah Shall take care of the associated devils as soon as those knots are untied.

May Allah annul any witchcraft made on any Muslim ameen. May Allah Protect all Muslims against witchcraft and any other form of evil ameen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It took me sometime because I wanted to put as much info as possible.

hoping that this will clear the issue.

Actually you raised an excellent point here, Alhamdulelah that you did raise, since this will allow further explanation.

My question was about muslims, not people in general, becoming possessed. Is it possible for one who places his faith in allah and muhammad as allah's messenger to become possessed? That's what I want to know.

The answer to this questions is the core of islam.

As I explained about there are two types of devilish related problems human being may encounter.

However, let us examine what does Quran say:

” So, the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together.* Except Iblees (Satan), - he refused to be among the prostrators.* (Allah) said: "O Iblees (Satan)! What is your reason for not being among the prostrators?" [iblees (Satan)] said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.* (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajeem (an outcast or a cursed one).* And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).* [iblees (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected* Allah said: "Then, verily, you are of those reprieved, * Till the Day of the time appointed* Iblees (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (humankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.* Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." (Quran 15-40)

Let me elaborate on the last verse and further explain, with all due respect to the translator, may Allah Reward him much. The verse literally says except your sincere, devotees.

Islam is a religion of working, we are on this earth to work to do, to take action, not to sit and let other carry our sins, or protect us or work on our behalf.

In many other positions, Allah encourages Muslims to work, for example, during the last ten days of Ramadan, there is a night that is highly blessed and worshiping this night I mean staying up all night to pray and recite Quran is highly regarded in the Eyes of Allah. Highly regarded to the extend that Allah made it equal to the worship of 1000 months. But Allah didn’t specify to us when exactly is this night. We were only told thru hadeeth that it is one of the nights of the last ten days (odd number). The objective is to let us work thru for ex, the night of the 21, 23rd..etc. We need to work hard to seek it, I mean the reward is worth it.

Same thing, the Messenger prayer and peace be upon him told us that in every Friday, there is a time on which supplications are answered. He only told us that this time is between Asr and Maghreb prayer. We also need to dedicate this time and work hard, thru reciting Quran, invoking upon Allah, making remembrance to benefit of this time. Another example is on the last third of the night, which also not specifically determined.

As u see, our religion is a religion of action, we always need to be alert, aware of Allah’s presence, seeking Allah’s Protection, Satisfaction, Guidance and Help and more. Only when we constantly strive to achieve this goal that we will become one of those sincere devotees whom Iblees has not control or influence upon.

It is not enough to verbally say La ilaha ila Allah Mohamadan Rasullah, then miss prayers, don’t remember Allah, fail to apply Quran and hadeeth within our daily life situations, ignore fasting..etc, then expect that Iblees will have no influence upon the person.

Allah Does not need no one, but we need Allah, we have to express our need, only then Iblees can never have influence upon us. Not only Iblees that we need to keep under Allah’s Protection, but also we need to be free from our self inspirations. We need not to let ourselves control or drive us, but we rather control and drive it.

Now let me continue, but as for being inflicted with witchcraft, this can happen to devoted people as a form of a test or trial. But as I quoted the hadeeth, one who is regular on eating dates in the morning Insh aAllah shall not be inflicted with witchcraft.

Just to make it easy, brief and simple.

It is not enough to say with your tongue la ilaha ila Allah Mohamdan rasulllah

[b]But you must live for la ilaha ila Allah, with la ilaha ila Allah and through la ilaha ila Allah.

More on this issue.

Do you want to be protected against demons? you can if u take the protective measures, if you dont respond to his call. As Quran explains:

"<b>And Shaytaan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: "Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. </b> I had no authority over you except that I called you, so you responded to me. So blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the wrong-doers." 9Quran 14:22)

This is the position of Shaytan. This how he will act in the Day After. It is up to us to be a part of his party who will loose at the end or the winner party.

As for the protective measures for instance, Insh aAllah in the next post I will quote the hadeeth.
