Quote:Women in Islam Versus Women in the Judaeo-Christian Tradition
The Myth and The Reality

PART 15 - THE VEIL ?

Finally, let us shed some light on what is considered in the West as the greatest symbol of women's oppression and servitude, the veil or the head cover. Is it true that there is no such thing as the veil in the Judaeo-Christian tradition? Let us set the record straight. According to Rabbi Dr. Menachem M. Brayer (Professor of Biblical Literature at Yeshiva University) in his book, The Jewish woman in Rabbinic literature, it was the custom of Jewish women to go out in public with a head covering which, sometimes, even covered the whole face leaving one eye free. 76 He quotes some famous ancient Rabbis saying, "It is not like the daughters of Israel to walk out with heads uncovered"
and "Cursed be the man who lets the hair of his wife be seen....a woman who exposes her hair for self-adornment brings poverty."
Rabbinic law forbids the recitation of blessings or prayers in the presence of a bareheaded married woman since uncovering the woman's hair is considered <b>"nudity". </b>
77 Dr. Brayer also mentions that "During the Tannaitic period the Jewish woman's failure to cover her head was considered an affront to her modesty. When her head was uncovered she might be fined four hundred zuzim for this offense." Dr. Brayer also explains that veil of the Jewish woman was not always considered a sign of modesty. Sometimes, the veil symbolized a state of distinction and luxury rather than modesty. The veil personified the dignity and superiority of noble women. It also represented a woman's inaccessibility as a sanctified possession of her husband. 78

Amazingly my wife once told me that in the Philippines about 15 or 20 years ago women used to cover up their head when going out especially when they enter the church.

This is very true, women covering themselves goes further than Islam, many ethnic groups around the world have and still do despite what religion they followed.

I do wish that women in my culture dressed more modestly. I respect the head covering that Muslim women wear. However, the full on "Burka" to where their face is even convered is very strange to me.

According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab:

1- The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. <b>If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. </b>

All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.

2- The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.

3- The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.

4- The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.

5- The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.

6- The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions.

Complete ‘hijaab’, besides the six criteria of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of ‘hijaab’ of the clothes is observing ‘hijaab’ in a limited sense. ‘Hijaab’ of the clothes should be accompanied by ‘hijaab’ of the eyes, ‘hijaab’ of the heart, ‘hijaab’ of thought and ‘hijaab’ of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc.

For if the woman be not covered, let her ALSO be shorn:" 1 Cor. 11:6 (AKJV)

`Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Convey from me even an Ayah of the Qur'an; relate traditions from Banu Israel, and there is no restriction on that but he who deliberately forges a lie against me let him have his abode in the Hell.'' [Al-Bukhari].

Mash'Allah, this is good to remember. A hijab does not a good muslimah make. I've seen some unseemly conduct from those who look the part but their adab is not muslim.

Jazak Allah Khair for this reminder.

John, the comparison here is irrelevant. Actually, I wish, I dream, I invoke upon Allah that all Muslim countries enforce discipline in regard to women clothing.

But as my brother Dan said, it must be coupled with a lot of other aspects. May Allah Allow us all to maintain a Muslim conduct ameen at all times.

There are, of course, many non-Muslims who have religious beliefs which state that the top of the head must be covered. Nothing wrong with that. But what is wrong is when this belief is forced upon those people who disagree with it.

To the best of my knowledge, Muslims are the only religious group who believe that their beliefs regarding head coverings must be inflicted upon those who don't share their beliefs.
