Three bombs that exploded in the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Dahab leaving at least 23 people dead were the work of suicide bombers, the governor of the south Sinai region has said.

Egyptian television had earlier reported that Monday's blasts, which also wounded 62 people, were caused by remote controlled devices.

"The explosions were a bit weaker than the previous ones, but now they are using suicide attacks," said Muhammad Hani.

Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, described the attacks as a "heinous act of terrorism" and vowed to punish those responsible.

Multiple attacks

Three foreigners were among those killed, including a German boy, the Egyptian interior ministry said.

"There was a plume of smoke and people started running and screaming."

The wounded included people from Denmark, Britain, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, South Korea, the US, Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

The Dahab attacks are the third directed at Sinai since October 2004, when 34 people died in simultaneous blasts at hotels in Taba, on the border with Israel.

In July 2005, 70 people were killed in multiple bombings in the southern Sinai resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.

The Egyptian authorities attributed those attacks to a small, Sinai-based group founded by a militant Islamist of Palestinian origin.

Screaming

Three explosions ripped through two restaurants and a supermarket in an area of Dahab, popular with tourists at around 0415 GMT on Monday.

Witnesses said shop windows and furniture were smashed and pools of blood lay on the floor. People had abandoned restaurants in mid-meal and fled from the scene.

Shops and stalls were destroyed

by the blast

"We heard three explosions close to the seafront alongside a supermarket in the centre of Dahab," said French tourist Frederic Mingeon.

"There was a plume of smoke and people started running and screaming."

"We ran towards the scene and we found people, our friends, lying on the ground. some were already dead," said Hani Sadeq, who worked at a local shop.

"Some were alive, with arms broken. We took them to the hospital. we want to know why this happened, I wish we knew who did it. If I saw him, I would tear him apart.

"Dahab is dead now," he added.

The town is a beach and diving destination popular with foreign backpackers and Egyptians - who were celebrating the Egyptian spring festival of Shamm al-Nassim.

Two suicide blasts rattle Sinai

Two men have blown themselves up in Egypt's north Sinai on Wednesday, one near an airport used by an international observer force and the other near the northern town of El Arish.

According to an interior ministry statement, the bombs, which followed three deadly explosions in the east Sinai resort of Dahab on Monday, killed only the bombers.

A spokesman for the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) group, which supervises the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty, said the first bomber appeared to single out for attack two of its vehicles but there were no MFO injuries.

The MFO, which has contingents from 11 countries, was set up to supervise security provisions in the 1979 peace treaty.

It patrols the Egyptian-Israeli border to ensure that the treaty is observed.

The second man blew himself next to a police car outside a police station in Sheikh Zuwayed, near the northern coast town of El Arish.

The car was empty and there were no other casualties, security sources said.

It was not immediately clear if all the incidents were related, but most members of the group blamed for attacks in Sinai over the past two years came from El Arish area.

The office of the governor of Sharkia province in the east of the Nile Delta meanwhile denied reports of a third incident in the town of Bilbeis.

Police sources had earlier said a group of gunmen ambushed policemen in Bilbeis, leading to an exchange of fire.

Conflicting versions

An interior ministry statement gave a different version of the two explosions in north Sinai and said one was by a bedouin on a bicycle carrying a bomb.

Foreigers were among 18 people

killed in Monday's triple blasts

It said a police officer was leaving El Gorah airport, where the MFO has its main base, when he saw a man carrying a bomb.

The bomb exploded as the officer's car passed, smashing the windscreen but causing no casualties, it said.

When two police officers left the North Sinai police headquarters to investigate the first incident, the Bedouin on the bicycle tried to obstruct them with a bomb, it said.

"The bomb blew him up and he died and the explosion had no other effect," the statement added.

Police sources had said that two policemen were injured in the first explosion.

Salam Curious

Good question

Well actually the situation is mutlifacted and it is pre mature to make a speculation on the real perptuators.

However, let me tell u the options i have.

Last summer, there was a blast in Taba. After this blast the security forces committed terrible crimes within Sinai among the original inhanitants. They almost arrested two from every home there, men were humiliated in front of their own families so were women. Those people are not used to let go. Retaliation was inevitable. The first news analysis declared that the real aim is to destabilize the image of the security appartus.

In case those poeple were Islamist, I m sorry to say this will be nothing except the fruit of preventing correct Islamic knowledge to be provided on the people's level. In Islam, a non Muslim is automatically granted a coventant of security as long as he/she is allowed into the country. In the modern time this will equal an entry visa.

His/her blood is made illgitimate to be wasted unless for legitimate causes such as committing murder. No other excuse can allow the killing of such people. Leave alone the Muslims.
