How are Muslim immigrants viewed?
#1

Greetings.

I am wondering what the perception is of Muslims (from Muslim countries) who migrate to America (or UK, Europe etc) in search of jobs or a better life. I've said previously that there were many muslim students at my university in Texas. Many of them took jobs in the US and moved here permanently away from their countries (Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Turkey etc).

How are these Muslims who move here away from their homelands viewed by the muslim world. Is migrating to the US discouraged? Do these Muslims who come here face any ridicule?

Thanks in advance.

I hate to say this, being an american, but I have witnessed first hand a great deal of prejudice against muslims in this country. In fact, there is general racism provolent towards all middle easterners - regardless to wether they are muslims or not. it is a sad thing to know about.

On the other hand, there are a lot of people here who mean well, and still have open arms to all who wish to come here. some of those people are working to repair the mind of this nation. Perhaps if there WERE more muslims here, and they had a greater voice, and could open their own hearts to those that persecute them, this process would be more effective. I am certain there are such muslim voices speaking, but the masses of people rarely stop raging long enough to hear what others have to say.

I am also curious about the same thing, though.

It would be foolish to say that in the Uk there isn't any racism, but I would say its not as bad as other european countries such as France or Germany.

There are numerous contributing factors to racism in the UK. Firstly there is the shear number of imigrants. The UK has the same population as France, but geographically is nearly half the size, and yet takes in nearly 50% of all the legal immigrants in the EU. Add to this the fact that most immigrants head to area's already populated by immigrants from their home nation, you have towns in the UK where immigrant population actually now out numbers the original 'white' population. These are also area's of high unemployment, so locals see this 'invasion' as taking their jobs. It also means that immigrants struggle to find jobs, and blame whites for stopping them getting jobs.

TBH, I don't give a damn if your black, white or green with yellow polkadots, if your willing to work hard then your good enough (although it might be advisable to see a doctor if you have yellow polkadots :) ).

Well I was more replying to a previous post, and I guess suhail would probably have a better idea about rascism in the UK than me anyway.

I do remember a program on TV with a woman going to India (she was born in Bradford to Indian parents). I don't remember the exact name the Indians used to describe her, but it meant 'half white' or something, and I think that she wasn't really accepted by anyone in India. They wheren't hostile towards her, but they treat her as an outsider.

Thanks for all the replies..

My question, which looking back wasn't phrased very well, was this:

How do Muslims in Muslim countries view Muslims who immigrate to other countries...especially America?

So my understanding was correct, if u r looking for a simple publich opinion, not religious one, well I will only talk about Egypt. Myself I have family in the US who immigrated during the Nasser era. As Egytpians we fully understand their reasons for going away. Even now if somone gets a chance to go to the US, people dont really have anything against the person.

Yet as u may realize, opinions differ from one person to another.

For example, I had many chances to move to the US in my youth, i was never encouraged and always turned them down.

u still didnt get what curious is looking for. He is looking for how do people in those immigrants home countries perceive the immigrants.

Curious to fill up more after posting I thought u may be looking for more social opinion. Well here in Egypt, people do look at them and treat them in an ordinary manner till they start acting like being detached or speak arabic with an accent, or fail to teach their children Arabic or islamic teachings. That is when they become subject to criticism.
