Muslims deny Quran supports Taheri-azar

Local Muslim leaders condemn attempts to link Islam's holy book to the actions of a man who hit nine people as he drove a sport utility vehicle through the heart of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus earlier this month.

The Islamic Association of Raleigh called a news conference Wednesday to take issue with Mohammed Taheri-azar's assertion in letters to news outlets that the Quran justified his attack.

In one letter, Taheri-azar wrote that he had read the Quran's 114 chapters 15 times. Marc Conaghan of the Muslim American Public Affairs Council said he didn't read it closely enough.

"This is totally untrue," he said.

Sanctity of life is taken seriously in the Quran, said Imran Aukhil of the Islamic Association of Raleigh.

Aukhil quoted from the Quran: "Whoever kills a man unjustly ... it is as if he has killed all of humanity, and whoever saves a life, it is as if he has saved all of humanity."

The panel sought to distance the Muslim community from Taheri-azar and avoid a backlash. "Muslims in general should not be held responsible because Muslims in general have not made any mistakes," said Ihab Saad of the Muslim American Society.

Saad said he will pray for Taheri-azar even though he has tarnished the image of Islam.

"We feel angry in the way a father feels angry when a son does something wrong," he said. But he spoke of the need to "give support to your brother whether he's oppressed or the oppressor."

Hani Chohan of the Islamic Association said there are no plans to communicate with Taheri-azar in Central Prison.

(People interested in learning more about Islam are invited to an Open House from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Islamic Association of Raleigh, 808 Atwater Street. Details: www.islam1.org or 834-9572.)

I am reminded of a documentary I watched once about people who according to their faith, thought it justifiable to kill doctors who performed legal abortions. They quoted chapter and verse from the Bible to support their claims that their fight to prevent abortion included taking the life of the doctors who worked at the clinics. It struck me as odd because here they were, trying to protect life, whom they all claimed was precious, but they were willing to take life to do it. It made no sense at all to me.

It just goes to show how someone could read something, and get the wrong understanding. I know it is not found anywhere in Qur'an where it states it's acceptable to strike someone with your SUV. It makes me wonder if people like this didn't already have such murderous thoughts and just used religion as a shield to carry them out.

Al Shamms, I understand that abortion is totally unacceptable in Christian faith even when the mother's life is in jeopardy. The idea, is that the mother is already baptised unlike the embryo. Therefore, if she dies, that is ok, whereas the embryo is still carrying the original sin. Just a comment.

As for the sanctity of life in Quran:

"And do not kill anyone which Allah has forbidden , except for a just cause. And whoever is killed (intentionally with hostility and oppression and not by mistake), We have given his heir the authority [(to demand Qisas, Law of Equality in punishment or to forgive, or to take Diya (blood money)]. But let him not exceed limits in the matter of taking life (i.e he should not kill except the killer only). Verily, he is helped (by the Islamic law)." (Quran 17:33)

The underlined part of the verse will be best translated as do not kill the soul that Allah Made forbidden. The word forbidden here means not allowed to be killed or terminated. And note that Allah Say the soul, any soul regardless of the religion or belief. Actually, life is so precious in the Eyes of Allah. No one knows how anyone may end his/her life.

The idea that if a child dies without being baptized it goes to hell is a Catholic teaching, not a christian one. The Bible teaches that children are not held accountable because they have not learned good from evil. I have read that muslims are very careful not to forbid what Allah has not forbidden, Christians are the same. No where in the Bible does it state abortion is wrong even if the mother's life is threatened. However you have some people in positions of authority, (the Pope for the catholics for instance) who come up with rulings that are based on their own opinions and not on any type of Biblical scholarship.

I hope I'm not too far off topic but just wanted to clarify teachings that come from the catholic church as opposed to those that are Biblically based.

That's sick!

Here's what Allah (may He be glorified and exalted) has ordered. And it's been the same since Adam's time;

17.31

You shall not kill your children
for fear of want, for it is We Who provide sustenance for them as well as for you; surely killing them is a great blunder.

6.137

Their shoraka' have induced many mushrikin to kill their own children
in order to ruin them and confuse them in their religion. If Allah wanted, they would not have done so. Therefore, leave them alone with their false inventions.

6.140

Actual losers are those who kill their own children
foolishly without knowledge and forbid food which Allah has provided them, falsely ascribing prohibitions to Allah. Certainly they have gone astray and are not at all rightly guided.

6.151

O Muhammad, say: "Come, I will recite what your Rabb has forbidden to you
: not to commit shirk with Him, to be kind to your parents,
not to kill your children
making the excuse of inability to support them - We provide sustenance for you and for them - not to commit shameful deeds whether open or secret, not to kill any soul forbidden by Allah except for the requirements of justice. These are the things which He enjoined you so that you may learn wisdom.

60.12 O Prophet! When the believing women come to you to take the oath of allegiance , take their pledge: that they will not commit shirk with Allah, that they will not steal, that they will not commit adultery,

that they will not kill their children

, that they will not give any cause for scandal which they may invent between either their hands or legs (a woman accusing another woman of having an illicit relationship with a man and spreads such stories - or - a woman carrying an illegitimate child and makes her husband believe that it is his), and that they will not disobey you in any just matter, then accept their allegiance and pray to Allah for the forgiveness. Surely Allah is Oft-Forgiving, most Merciful.

33.62 ...and you will never find any change in the Way of Allah.

Faris, do I really have to say you took what I said out of context and ran with it?

In an effort to narrow the gap here, Faris, in brief what Shamms was saying is that the idea of making abortion totally prohibted even if the mother's life is in danger due to mother being baptised unlike the embroy is a catholic one that was made through man opinion rather than a bible's text.

Isnt this correct Shamms?

He wasnt encouraging the killing of newly born or children.

Yes Muslimah, that is correct, and it is a shame you had to come behind me to explain that. I have to wonder at Faris' motivation for posting that reply. Anytime anyone can cut a sentence is half like that and take half a thought out of context says to me the person has alterior motives for being here.

Shamms, u dont have to assume such intention, I m sure Faris never meant this. It might be just an error reading or something. But i m sure that was not the intention. I mean why would he want to take things out of context, if he is here to learn and help others learn about Islam, then he would certainly know that if he wants to discuss, he must do so objectively. Or else his cause will be lost.... Just give the man credit of not being one who twists facts.
