Adultery – In Biblical And Islamic Terms
#31

Bismillah

Assalamu aleikum,

Hi JohnDoe,

I will make a final attempt to clarify this for you.

And just try to bear in mind, that Islam is built on TWO SOURCES, the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad's, SAWS Sunnah, which we can read in the hadiths.

First recall that the Qur'an was revealed during 23 years, and some things were revealed step by step, so that it would easily be accepted by the new Muslims during this early stage of Islam. As for example the punishment for adultery. During the period before Islam adultery was common and the laws for that was now about to be changed. So the first revealation merely spoke of the punishment of confining only woman guilty of sexual offences in their houses until they died.

''If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way.''
The Qur'an 4:15

The second revelation covered both men and women and was a little specific regarding punsishment for adultery.

''If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning, Most Merciful.''
The Qur'an 4:16

The third revealation came with specific punishment for adultery.

''The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.''
The Qur'an 24:2

When this verse was revealed, it was understood that those guilty of adultery should be given one hundred lashes as a punishment.

The Prophet of Islam, SAWS clarified the injunction;

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Number 817:

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

'...Allah sent Muhammad with the Truth and revealed the Holy Book to him, and among what Allah revealed, was the Verse of the Rajam (the stoning of married person (male & female) who commits illegal sexual intercourse, and we did recite this Verse and understood and memorized it. Allah's Apostle did carry out the punishment of stoning and so did we after him.

I am afraid that after a long time has passed, somebody will say, 'By Allah, we do not find the Verse of the Rajam in Allah's Book,' and thus they will go astray by leaving an obligation which Allah has revealed. And the punishment of the Rajam is to be inflicted to any married person (male & female), who commits illegal sexual intercourse, if the required evidence is available or there is conception or confession...'

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Number 804:

Narrated Ash Shaibani:

'I asked 'Abdullah bin Abi Aufa, 'Did Allah's Apostle carry out the Rajam penalty ( i.e., stoning to death)?' He said, "Yes." I said, "Before the revelation of Surat-ar-Nur or after it?" He replied, "I don't Know."

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Number 805:

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah Al-Ansari:

'A man from the tribe of Bani Aslam came to Allah's Apostle and Informed him that he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and bore witness four times against himself. Allah's Apostle ordered him to be stoned to death as he was a married Person.'

So there is no doubt whatsover about this issue in Islam, it has been clarified enough, beyond every doubt.

So you are so right John, you don't have to worry a bit, everything is in order when it concerns this - NOW it is only human beings that has to begin to wake up and act accordingly. It could also be a good line to follow for non-Muslims too, to think before act.

Hi JohnDoe,

I already KNEW you would comment that - Subhan'allah!

You are 'missing' the point - or I think rather PREFERING to 'miss' the point - well no harm done! We were discussing the sources in Islam and I gave you one of them, hadith. And it clearly states ''Did
Allah's Apostle carry out the Rajam penalty
( i.e., stoning to death)?' He said, "Yes
."

So what you have been asking for is clearly answered here, there is such a penalty in Islam.

On the other hand what YOU emphasize on is something very different, it is a question about THE ORDER of revelations of the QUR'AN. And 'Abdullah bin Abi Aufa does not KNOW the order of revelations, but on the other hand the PROPHET of Islam, SAWS do. So this is TWO different issues in the same hadith.

(I wonder WHO is collecting straws now...)

Are you ready to give up now and move on to another issue?

Rehmat, doesn't the Quran take precidence over the hadiths? If one contradicts the other, for example lashing verses stoning, shouldn't the Quran be followed and only lashings?

Shaunee when we are ordered in The Holy Quran to obey The Prophet, it means we should obey his sayings and doing. The Hadeeth of The Prophet is not just a hadeeth like any other human, it is a Prophet's hadeeth which means that it is a revelation from Allah(SWS).

Please read The below thread which sister Muslimah and me started, I did not add much from a long time in it I know, but by will of Allah I am in the process to complete with sister Muslimah what we started, anad that is in order to shut all the mouths that say that The Prophet Ahadeeth are not genuine, or we are not to take by them.

And yes Shaunee, The Quran does not contradict The Sunnah, U have a long way in order to learn about Sharia' and Fiqh in Islam, even though some say that they read enough, and they had enough, beleive me, u will never learn enough and read enough about Shariea in Islam unless u study it with an open heart and eyes and mind. But with blind eyes, and sealed hearts how are they to c the truth and learn what is right from wrong.( and I am not saying this about u shaunee dear, but other members)

Just to clarify one point here Umm, the two Ayas u quoted are not to be taken as the gradual passing of the punishment. But rather they are applicable on the cases of homosexuality. Actually when the one regarding women was revealed Allah's Messenger salla Allah a`alyhee wa sallam expressed much gratitude to Allah for giving them a way out. So those 2 Ayas deal with homosexuality cases only. Zina is different. The lashing is for unmarried people while stoning is applied on a married person either male of female.

Assalamu aleikum,

Thank you sister Muslimah, for clarifying. It cannot be put any clearer than you did. I am sorry if I mislead anyone with what I wrote, my intentions was the best. May Allah, SWT show me mercy and the right way.

''The lashing is for unmarried people while stoning is applied on a married person either male of female.''

The question is - can anyone MISUNDERSTAND the law now? Shukran sister!

Hope it leads to thoughts before action.

The law is already clear and obvious. It had nothing to do with the level of understanding but rather accepting.

As for John understanding or not, he does understand. He never stated other wise. He disapproves though. No matter how u explain, it is just the acceptance. If u noticed his development, he is growing aggressive which reflects a more seeing the truth. When one is on a wrong track and sees the truth, he/she usually grows aggressive towards those who present or let us say represent the truth. He/she is fighting his battle to continue deceving him/herself.

May be I am brief but I think clear enough.

Assalamu aleikum,

Yes sister I did notice this development, and it is that kind of development that will bring a person towards the end of the road that person is walking on and the 'battle' then takes place and after that another path has to be taken - there is a right one and a wrong one.

John, which one will you take? Only Allah, SWT knows that. It is never too late to ask for His guidance - just keep that in mind. It will not be a defeat - on the contrary. May He enlighten your heart.

This is so true, it's a weak display of emotions for him to slip back into the cheap comments again. He should at least <b>try </b>and pretend to not be effected by the realisation he's coming to. It's fear as you say, when it starts to sink in, the easiest way to fight it is with comments like <b>"Look how easy it is to be a Prophet" </b> or "Muslims are a bunch of Savages" etc May Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) forgive him for these comments, it will be recorded. I would suggest he read the two verses below...they seem to have been written for him...

<b><i>"Deem not that Allah is unaware of what the wicked do. He but giveth them a respite till a day when eyes will stare (in terror)" "As they come hurrying on in fear, their heads upraised, their gaze returning not to them, and their hearts as air." "And warn mankind of a day when the doom will come upon them, and those who did wrong will say: Our Lord! Reprieve us for a little while. We will obey Thy call and will follow the messengers. (It will be answered): Did ye not swear before that there would be no end for you?"</i></b>

(Quran 14,42-44)

Remember Johnny boy you WILL DIE SOME DAY FACT, just in case you forgot when you're sipping those Beers or on the old Pork Pies watching footy. If you are 100% confident as an Agnostic (which by the very definition of your name means your not confident) But if you are 100% confident as an Agnostic to keep making Comments statements like this about Islam. And to keep doing so until the day you die then, enjoy it now.

However if you think theres a %50 chance we (Muslims) could be right, it'd be a good idea to have some kind of back up plan right? If not happy life, i hope everythings good when you die, and you are ok with what will come after. When you go to "Agnostic land". Remember i used to be Agnostic like you too, then i grew up.

Ok i'm done this is my effort to extend a hand bro that's it from me.
