Salaam Alaikum sister ... very well said. You are so correct.

Assalamu'alaykum....

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

what about the Bible?

Pork prohibited in the Bible:

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".

"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."

[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

4. Pork has fat building material

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.

5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.

6. Pig is the most shameless animal

The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife." If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs.

Yeh with things like this it's just not worth it, besides, as soon as i realise something is Pork i want it out of my mouth or off of me quicker than i can say the word. This happened recently with Fruit Pastelles, formerly my favourite sweets, someone told me they are made with pig, i spat em out and threw em away until i know for sure. I'm still only eating fish unless i can get food from my Muslim area of town, so meat is not so hard but sweets, even some drinks. I always look at it like this, if i'm unsure as to if something is Haraam, even if it's only a small doubt, i don't do it. It's a lot safer. That little thing could be the tip of the scale you don't want. Nope not worth it, i'd say chuck it lol [Image: biggrin.gif]

So true! They don't know what they are missing, but it's if they want to get there in the first place. I'm being picked at daily by a Jewish guy at work, an African Jew - which i don't think i've ever seen before, but that's irrelevant. He's decided to send me links after links of websites cursing The Prophet (Peace be upon him) & Islam, telling me my religion opresses women etc etc.

The funny thing was, he spoke to me fine on the occasions i saw him before he knew i was Muslim, i knew he was Jewish but i still considered him a friend at work. We had proper jokes together. But now he's found out i'm Muslim i come to work in the morning to find emails telling me how evil Islam is and The Prophet (Peace be upon him) was this and that. Forgetting i got all these links and things thrown at me the first few days i came to this site, read through them found the truth and know all the fabrications backwards. I used to think i hope these people go to the fire, now i never think that, i'm actually worried for them because they don't know, or even think it's coming, and that's the worst.

Assalamu aleikum,

An 'old' issue coming up, interesting I haven't read it before.

Some time ago I saw a program about women that do cover up completely, and one sister said that she feels comfortable when wearing gloves since when going shopping and touching different things for example book covers one cannot know if they are made of pig leather, so having something between the haram and the skin is a good point.

Brother Anya I do agree much with your thoughts, I also had thoughts that non-Muslims will enter Hellfire and that it had nothing to do with me, but today I feel such great urge for them, I truly FEEL for them and worry about their fate. So we have to struggle and continue on the way to invite them and enlighten them about Islam, with patience, sabr insha'Allah. And may Allah, SWT guide them who TRULY wish to know His Truth and that feels humbleness in their hearts and wish follow and live accordingly, insha'Allah. Allahu Akbar and in Him alone we trust.

as salam alykom

smart idea Umm.

Whenever I read your posts Anya again and again I remember how a Muslim may suffer for living abroad. I did the same when I visited US or Europe. I think even bread can contain lard. The suggestion, is to go for the kushar (did I spell this correct) shelf. Jews dont consume pork ingredients.

Arif jazakum Allah khairan katheeran for the bible related info.

Bismillah ar-rahman ar-raheem

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

JazakAllah khair to whoever sent the email with the forum topics, I have a feeling it was sister Muslimah [Image: wink.gif] but these are some very interesting topics.

I just wanted to comment on the topic of HALAL food, there were two threads from that email that talked about this, I will post the information on this thread since it has received the most attention so far.

First of all, on the other thread, Muslimah you were questioning whether chicken was halal... any kind of "meat", not just red meat but anything that comes from an animal, even non-meat animal products, MUST be from an animal that is ZABIHAH (raised and slaughtered properly) or it is not halal. This applies to any animal, lamb, cow, chicken, etc, the only one it does not apply to is fish or other animals from the sea. And most certainly all animal products in the U.S. and probably other non-muslim countries are not halal unless they are specifically from a muslim butcher who does it halal.

Also, the point that it is ok to eat the christian's meat, this is assuming that they are slaughtering according to the original christian method, which was similar to halal, and also similar to kosher. unfortunately, the christians here do not do this anymore, and their meat/chicken is not halal. The Qu'ran gives a provision that we may eat non halal if there is nothing else available and it is a necessity... that does NOT mean if there is no other meat available, but it means if there is no other FOOD available, and there is alhamdulillah plenty of halal food from plant/vegetable sources available in this country, so there is no excuse to eat non halal meat/chicken. and I would just like to point out, for all those who think it is ok to just say "bismillah" and the food becomes halal.... the issue of eating halal meat/chicken is not trivial, in the Qur'an , surah al-Anaam (6) ayat 121 it says:

And eat not of that whereon Allah's name hath not been mentioned, for lo! it is abomination. Lo! the devils do inspire their minions to dispute with you. But if ye obey them, ye will be in truth idolaters.

it is an abomination to eat meat that has not had Allah's name pronounced on it. Other english translations say it is "impiety." I think that is a very serious issue, and we should all think twice before eating something that may potentially be from a non-halal source, whether it is pork or other animals. It can also be thought of as a way of greatly disrespecting Allah (swt), our creator and provider, who provided the animals to us for meat, and we cannot even be grateful enough to remember Him when slaughtering them.

Another point I would like to mention, sister Muslimah you said that it is ok to eat kosher food because jews do not consume pork products. THIS IS NOT ENTIRELY TRUE!! I really want to emphasize this because I know many people who assume that, as you did, but they do not understand the guidelines of kosher, and this is very dangerous, so please take note of this!

jews do not eat pork MEAT.... but they allow any other sort of pork product, such as those made from pork skin, hooves, etc. so just because something is kosher, it could still have pork product in it! the most common example of this in the U.S. is gelatin, which is used in gummy candies and yogurt... gelatin is made either from cow bones or pork skin, both of which are gelling agents. Kosher gelatin can still be made with pork skin, because the jews do not forbid eating that, they only forbid eating pork MEAT. gelatin made from cow bones is only ok IF THE COW WAS ZABIHAH, and there is usually no way of knowing that in the U.S. and it is also very unlikely anyway.

please take a look at the following site which has good information about which types of ingredients to avoid, they also give a chart of which "kosher" products are actually halal, and which are not.

Kosher vs Halal:

http://www.eat-halal.com/kosher.shtml

Ingredients to Avoid:

http://www.eat-halal.com/ingredients.shtml

that website also has lots of other good information, including a detailed description of what is ZABIHAH.

Also, here is a very interesting article about pork. If you read it then you will understand and really appreciate why Allah swt forbade pork, and even if you are not muslim you will probably not want to eat any more pork after reading this!! And note, this was not written by a muslim, but rather by the inventor of Kellogg cereals, who was a seventh day adventist (christian)

jazakAllah khair everyone for reading my post, i know it was long but as I said before, the issue of eating halal is VERY serious, and especially in non-muslim countries like the U.S. we must be extra cautious!!

inshaAllah i hope this was helpful, and may Allah swt guide us all to the right path, ameen

salam alaikum [Image: biggrin.gif]
