Great conversation going here, i missed it. As a new muslim i feel worse than all you do probably. So many of my old sins are right behind me, i feel i want to be a muslim for a good 30 or so years yet, so i can truely purify myself. Everyday i think, what if i was to die tommorow, i know it's grim but it could happen. Would it be too late? What would Allah think of me at the present time.


I want to at least equal my 25 years as a non muslim, or an unaware muslim with 25 years as a muslim! asking a lot i know...Insha'Allah i will get that time. That's why i always seem like i'm hurrying with all things in Islam, i love my brothers and sisters who say, take it step by step but i feel i have to get moving now, no one knows when their time is. Horrible thought but it's Allahs sceince.


Also, i'm new to Ramadaan, i have a rough idea what must be done, but would like to know more, could anyone point me to the best link for Ramadaan information. Or post some information here that's not already in this forum. Thaaaanks.

Much appreciated Muslimah, Just read the 4 sections of fasting, it's a lot more complex than i originally thought. Thank you for the links sister, section 3 confused me a little. Ok it confused me a lot, can someone help i know this is long.

Occasions which are not supposed to be fasted:


1. Feast days: Scholars are consensus that fasting feast days are not allowed according to the hadeeth:” It was narrated under the authority of Omar (may Allah be please with him) that the Messenger of Allah (PAPBUH) instructed not to fast on feast days saying that Al Fitr day indicates breaking your fast after Ramadan, while you should eat of your sacrifice slaughtered on the Adha day” reported by Ahmed.

What are the feast days?

2. Altashareeq days: Those are the three days which succeed the slaughter day according to the hadeeth:” It was narrated under the authority of Ibn Abass (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah sent someone to inform people: Do not fast during these three days as they are days of food, drink and copulation”.

And again what are the slaughter days?

3. Friday: one is not allowed to volunteer by fasting a Friday. However, one may combine the fasting of a Thursday before or a Saturday after. Also if a Friday coincided with an occasion (like Arafa or Ashoura which will be highlighted later), it could be fasted then.

So when fasting during Ramadaan, you don't fast on a friday? Sorry this bit confused me. And also, what is Arafa and Ashoura sorry, this is kinda shameful. I know i can find out by web searching but theres soo many sites, it would take me ages, i know you guys know off the top of your heads.

Occasions which are recommended to be fasted:


1. 6 days of the month of Shawal (the following month of Ramadan): Under the authority of Abi Ayoub Alansary that the Prophet (PAPBUH) said, “whoever fasts Ramadan succeeded with 6 days of Shawal will be rewarded as if fasted the whole year”. The days could be fasted sequential or individually.

So fasting six days after ramadan is looked upon highly by Allah?

The first nine days of Dhul Hija with emphasis on the Day of Arafa (when people gather at mount Arafa for Haj) but only for one who is not performing Haj. It was narrated under the authority of Abi Qatada (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (PAPBUH) said “ Fasting the day of Arafa for those who are not performing Haj eliminates the sins of two years, the past and future one, While fasting the day of A`ashoura

Dhul Hija???

3. Fasting the 10th of Moharam (A`ashoura): It was narrated under the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (PAPBUH) when he moved to Medina noticed that the Jews fast the day of A`ashoura so he asked them why? They said it is a good day when Allah rescued Moses (peace be upon him) and children of Israel from their enemy. So Moses (peace be upon him) fasted that day. Prophet Mohamed (PAPBUH) said “we are more obliged towards Moses (PUH) and he fasted the day instructing Muslims to fast it” reported by consensus. To further explain there are three options for the way of fasting Ashoura::To fast:


9th, 10th and 11th Dhul Hija.


To fast 9th and 10th only.


To fast the 10th only.

Can someone explain this whole section for me, it really lost me. How do we apply this to our fasting...CONFUUUUUSED

4. Fast as many days of Shaban as possible:It was narrated under the authority of Osama Ibn Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them) that he asked Prophet Mohamed (PAPBUH) Oh Messenger of Allah I did not notice you fast as many days in any other month like during Shaban? He said: this is a month which people usually ignore being between Rajab and Ramadan. It is also a month when deeds are taken to be presented before Allah, and I would like my deeds to be presented while I’m fasting” reported by Abou Dawoud.

What is Rajab???

7. Fasting 3 days of each month: Abou Dhar Alghafary (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “ The Messenger of Allah (PAPBUH) instructed us to fast 3 days of each month:

So if you fast three days of each month, then this is also look upon highly by Allah?

Ok, dont worry I will do as much as possible and my brothers and sisters will probably continue if not Insh aAllah I will do the rest later.


1. Feast days which are the days we celebrate as a feast, this is english, well the feast if the day after Ramadan ends when we celebrate the end of fasting. That is one. The onther one is on 10th of Dhul hija, which the last month in the lunar calendar. We celebrate this day as a feast after Haj (pilgrimage) on Arafa which is a mount where the Messenger spent a day as part of Haj rituals. In other words, u r not supposed to fast when they announce that RAmadan ended.


So a feast is how can I explain this it is an religious celebration usually comes after ritual, like after fasting or standing in Arafat.


2. Slaughter day is part of Haj Rituals when we slaughter a lamp on feast day.


3. We fast Fridays during RAmadan, but we dont single out fasting Fri during any other month as a voluntary fasting. Is this clear now. During Ramadan, we fast every single day. No stoping except for reasons of illness, travelling.

what is Arafa and Ashoura

Arafa the most important stop during Hajj, located beyond Muzdalifah. it is when we stand on jabal Arafat praying and asking Allah forgivness, He will be Allah subhanaahu Wa ta'ala in the lower skies waiting for His slaves to ask him forgivness so that He will grant them and they will return back home with no sins at all. Clear or not yet


Ashoura, is the tenth day of the first Lunar month of Muharam, but as i heard it is makrooh to fast that day alone, because the jews used to fast it alone so we are not supposed to do what they exactly do so we will fast a day before or day after or day before and after, Allah knows best.

So fasting six days after ramadan is looked upon highly by Allah?

Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari (raa) related the Messenger of Allah, (saas), said:



"Whoever observes the Ramadan fast and follows it with six days of fast in Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted Dahr (the whole year)." (Bukhari)


Dahr means the whole year or it may also mean forever, or for life, so this is a very big bounty by Allah that we will not leave, right .

What do u mean? Well if u want to know what it is this is the last month of the Lunar year and it is the month when we perform Haj, that is why it was called Dhul Hijja, actually in arabic it is pronounced as Tho Al-Hijja'.

Now here I will tell u a story about the Sons of Israel so the matter will be clear to u . Allah mentioned in The Holy Quran many stories about the sons of Israel one of them is when he saved them from the Pharoah:


Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem


47. O Children of Israel! Remember My Favour which I bestowed upon you and that I preferred you to the 'Alamîn (mankind and jinns) (of your time period, in the past).



48. And fear a Day (of Judgement) when a person shall not avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from him nor will compensation be taken from him nor will they be helped.


49. And (remember) when We delivered you from Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, who were afflicting you with a horrible torment, killing your sons and sparing your women, and therein was a mighty trial from your Lord.


50. And (remember) when We separated the sea for you and saved you and drowned Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people while you were looking (at them, when the sea-water covered them). 2, Surat Baqara


The sons of Israel(jews) were working as slaves in egypt the Pharaoh and his people enslaved them. The pharaoh who ruled Egypt was a tyrant who oppressed the descendants of Jacob (pbuh), known as the children of Israel (Bani Israel). Then he saw a vision that his death will be on the hand of one of the sons of Israel so he decided to kill all the baby boys born, then experts of economics said to Pharaoh that this will cause annihilation to the sons of Israel, then we will have no slaves or servants to serve us, so he decided to kill one year and leave the other. So Musa(pbuh) was born on the year the boys were to be killed, but it is Allah's will to save him, and he was raised in Pharaoh home(his enemy). Then Musa(pbuh) grew up and he was loved by everybody and he was a very strong man, that he killed a man just by pushing him with no intention to because one jew was asking for his help , he fled then to palestine, that will be another long story, there when the revelation started and he was ordered by Allah to worship none but Him:

9. And has there come to you the story of Mûsa (Moses)?


10. When he saw a fire, he said to his family: "Wait! Verily, I have seen a fire, perhaps I can bring you some burning brand therefrom, or find some guidance at the fire."


11. And when he came to it (the fire), he was called by name: "O Mûsa (Moses)!


12. "Verily! I am your Lord! So take off your shoes, you are in the sacred valley, Tuwa.


13. "And I have chosen you. So listen to that which is inspired to you.


14. "Verily! I am Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so worship Me, and perform As­Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) for My Remembrance. 20, Surat Taha


Then Moses (pbuh) and Aaron (pbuh)(his half brother) went to Pharaoh and delivered their message given to them by Allah and asked him to send the children of Israel with them, he refused of course and did not beleive in Allah. Then many things happened which is long until the day moses took the children of Israel and fled to palestine, until they reached the red sea, Pharaoh and his army was catching upon them, and they had no way to escape, the jews said we are done we are al dead, but Mosa(PBUH) said no I have Allah with me he will save us, Allah ordered Musa to Smite the sea with his staff, Moses(PBUH) did as he was commanded. A fierce wind blew, the sun shone brightly, and in a flash the sea parted, the crests of the waves standing like mountains on each side. Moses led his people across. This miracle proved Moses's oft-repeated claim, Pharaoh and his army had seen the miracle, how the sea had parted, but being the pretender that he was, Pharaoh turned to his men and proclaimed: "Look! The sea has opened at my command so that I may follow those rebels and arrest them!" They rushed across the parted waters, and when they were midway, Allah commanded the sea to return to its former state.


Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem:


52. And We inspired Mûsa (Moses), saying: "Take away My slaves by night, verily, you will be pursued."



53. Then Fir'aun (Pharaoh) sent callers to (all) the cities.


54. (Saying): "Verily! These indeed are but a small band.


55. "And verily, they have done what has enraged us;


56. "But we are host all assembled, amply fore-warned."


57. So, We expelled them from gardens and springs,


58. Treasures, and every kind of honourable place.


59. Thus [We turned them (Pharaoh's people) out] and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.


60. So they pursued them at sunrise.


61. And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Mûsa (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken."


62. [Mûsa (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me."


63. Then We inspired Mûsa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.


64. Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place.


65. And We saved Mûsa (Moses) and all those with him.


66. Then We drowned the others.


67. Verily! In this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers. 26, Surat Al-Shu'ara'


This is in short the story of Prophet Musa(PBUH) and the sons of Israel, and how they were saved from Pharaoh, so Musa(Pbuh) to celibrate the victory that Allah bestowed upon him on that day which is the tenth of Muharam, he decided to fast in thanking Allah. The Prophet Muhammad, when he saw the jews fasting on that day, he asked them why ru fasting? they told him why, so he said: we are more obliged towards Moses (PUH). Prophet Muhammad meant that Moses(Pbuh) is the Prophet of Allah, and he has more right to follow the path of Musa, but of course he did not order his sahaba until this fasting day was approved to the prophet from Allah by Gabriel(Pbuh) .Is it clear now or I talked a lot and made u more confused

What is Rajab???

Rajab is the seventh month of the Lunar year. before Sha'ban

Yes, and these days are preferred to be the 13,14,and 15th of each lunar month. the past monday, tuesday and wedensday were the 13, 14th and 15th of Sha'ban so it was highly looked upon to fast these days, they passed u now, u can fast after ramadan these three days. to help u more in the Lunar months :


1- Muharam. First month of the Lunar year.


2- Safar.


3-Rabee' Awal.


4- Rabee' Akher.


5- Jmaday Al-Ola.


6- Jamady Al-Akhera.


7- Rajab.


8- Sha'ban.

11- Thou Al-Qi'da.

U are more than welcome brother, and yes brother there is a lot more, that is why we are telling u step by step, u think we know much, beleive me we being born muslims are still ignorant of many things, and we are still learning, we should keep on learning till the day we die, and we should never say that now we know everything, because then u have claimed to be perfect in knowledge, and only then u will be considered ignorant. let us put it this way, as far as u need righ now is to know that fasting is either:


1. Compulsory obligatory (in Arabic it is called fard) which is only the month of Ramadan.


2. Voluntary (in Arabic tata`uw) which is recommended according to the Sunnah of the Messenger (salla Allah a`alyhee wa sallam) in different occaisons.


U need to focus now on Ramadan as it is coming Insh a Allah in less than 15 days.


During fasting, u need to observe the fast which is to refrain from eating, drinking and intercourse as from Fajr (dawn) till maghreb (sun set). U may use Islamicfinder to see timings, or u may refer to your local masjed for this.


U also need to control your temper even if someone attacks u verbally or stresses u. Because fasting is not only to refrain from food and drink but also to help us instill Islamic moral and teachings in dealing with people. Believe me dealing with people is the real criteria for one's strive on the path of piety.


I d like to go step by step so that u dont get overwhelmed.
