Prohibited Names for Muslim children

Why on earth are you forbidden to imitate Christians? What's so evil about Blessed Mother Teresa, St Francis of Assisi, John Paul II, St Charbel, St Vincent de Paul, St Clare, etc?

Are Muslims allowed to name their sons Jesus considering He's a "prophet" in Islam?

I've been told by Muslims that "Mohammad" means "praised one", but from my understanding of Arabic - at least in my (Lebanese) dialect - Mohammad is the word used to describe one who is "baptized". Is there a connection?

Thanks & God bless.

Hi FHC,

Why do you assume the reason for not imitating Christians is because Christians are evil? :conf06:

We are Muslims. God's last and final messenger to all of mankind left us with the Quran and the Sunnah. Why will we need to imitate the ways of the Christians? I think you will not expect that Christians should imitate the ways of the hindus?

I know alot of Muslims with the name of Jesus, but usually they opt for the Arabic version of the name: Eesa.

Take care

Why else would you be against the idea?

I've been studying the Koran lately & from what I gather, Mohammad (PBUH) commanded us to look to the Gospel for revelations from God/Allah. He implied that the prophets do not contradict one another. Didn't he also say something about reconciling his message to that of Jesus Christ's??? The doctrine of Taref is a later development & based on a false assumption. Neither the Koran nor the Hadith teach that Christians or Jews corrupted their Scriptures. We have manuscripts from the first few centuries AD which prove the Bible hasn't been tampered with. Please keep that in mind. I agree with the Koran that many Christians don't live up to Biblical expectations.

Of course I do! Regardless of a person's religion, if they're living a good moral life than they deserve to be imitated (in behaviour not worship).

I'm not suggesting Muslims imitate the way Christians proclaim their beliefs. But we all have the ability to perform good deeds, therefore, we should be able to connect on that level.

That's awesome! Did you know "Joshua" is the Hebrew name for Jesus?

One of the sahaba was sitting reading the bible once and the Prophet noticed him. He inquired what is he doing? The sahaba said he is reading the bible, to which the Prophet replied, we have something which is better than it. The sahaba left his reading.

The difference between bible and Quran is that Bible is written by man and Quran is from God alone, and therefore the only flawless book in exsistance. Anything written by man can contain truth, but also will contain error. So why take what is doubtful over that which is certain?

There are plenty excellent Muslim role models for us to pattern our lives after. I guess you understand the concept of the Sunnah. So as a Muslim is is ridiculous for me to think I should be more like such and such Chritian, when all the guidance is need is available to me with certainty.

The bottom line, is we have our belief, and you have yours. I dont see that is something for you to take offence to.

When I finish studying the Koran, I'll start a new topic whereby we can discuss (not compare) our sacred texts. Obviously, as a Christian, I believe that the Holy Bible is the inspired word of God, but I don't expect you, as a Muslim, to agree, although Mohammad (PBUH) showed great respect towards the Torah & the Gospel & commanded us to obey what's written in them. More on this later.

Getting back on topic... would it be better for a you to imitate a Muslim terrorist (who follows the Sunnah) or a Christian saint (who believes in God/Allah but doesn't share your beliefs)? I know you're probably thinking neither, but my point is, actions speak louder than words.

I'm not offended at all :)

Take care & God bless.

I just would like to comment on "would it be better for a you to imitate a Muslim terrorist (who follows the Sunnah)". But to maintain the theme of the thread, read post 15 on the following link and pls reply.

also u may search the word terrorist on this site, u will get articles that would help u in your quest.

As far as why wouldnt we imitate the non Muslims, just as Jennifer said, if Allah Taught us what is right and what is wrong, why would I imitate anyone esle? if they are good, that is good for them, still I wouldnt copy them because they are good, but rather I must adopt an attitude according to Quran and Sunnah because Allah Commanded me to do. Can u see the difference?

If i m in a non muslim country, how would i be recognised as a Muslimah, if I was imitating the non muslims in my appearence? If I m in a non Muslim country i d be only distinguished as a Muslimah for observing prayers for instance, or fasting.

U know that Islam spread in Asia only thru the Islamic moral conduct of Muslim merchants? Thus, we are commanded to only follow Quran and sunnah which suffice to lead a good life and Insh aAllah end up in Jannah. Nothing else is needed. For instance, if this non muslim who adopts an excellent conduct, drinks and eats pork, shall I still copy? Certainly not. Alhamdulelah we have enough of guidance, full, comprehensive that didnt leave the tiniest part of our lives.
