Ramadan question.
#1

Assalamualaikum All,

I wish to ask if brushing the teeth is allowed during fasting. I just wish to know if anyone knows it.

But let me make it clear that, let this thread not start arguments exchange on the topic.

Jazak Allahu Khairan

Wassalam

Ahmed.

Bismillah

As salam alaikum

The Prophet alaihi salatu wa salam used to brush with the miswak while fasting.

I have heard some scholars saying brushing the teeth with a toothbrush is okay. The debate that I hear about most is whether toothpaste is permissible.

Some say it is okay if none is swallowed. Others say no toothpaste because it is too difficult to not swallow which will break the fast.

Question :

Will brushing teeth break your fast?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah

If tooth paste does not get into the throat, then the fast is not broken. However, it would be better to use tooth paste at night and to Sewaak at day time.

May Allah guide us to his obedience.

THE USE OF TOOTHPASTE

Many scholars consider the use of toothpaste during the period of fasting as undesirable (makruuh), because it is a thorough or rather extensive way of cleaning the teeth. This would have been all right if not because of the fasting. The reason why thorough cleaning is considered makruuh is because of the fear of swallowing water as one attempts to rinse and flush out the taste and soapy residue of toothpaste. This fear is justified by hadith reported by Laqit bin Sabrah (raa) that the Messenger of Allah said: "Perfect your Wudu, clean between your fingers and sniff water thoroughly unless you are fasting." (Abu Dawud and Nasa'e)
