Haraam promotions
#1

Salaam

Basically this applies to everything in life.

Now most of you will probably say don't eat at McDonalds or boycott certain companies because of a political issues, others will say it’s only food or a gift.

Many of us will get offers, promotions, haraam gifts (sweets etc) for the sake of cheap goods!

If you got anything that remotely sounds promotional or offers like for example with some sweets we cannot eat or a money saving book for McDonald’s food, what would you do:

- Give it to a non-believer?

- Throw it in the trash can?

- Recycle it?

- Take it anyway!?

- Don’t know!

Some of you may say give it to a non-believer (we tend to do this alot anyway), but isn't our job to convince our non-believing humans to see our way of life, correct them to the right path?

So giving away unwanted gifts, promotional offers and haraam sweets to non-believers because we ourselves cannot take is right or wrong?

What would you do with your haraam gifts (goods, food, drinks)?

Also we have people who make money (profit) for the sake of survival of so fair enough you buy cheap and sell for profit that’s fine... but what if what you’re buying is stolen? Would you knowingly buy stolen items for profit yourself?

Finance is a long issue so I will not go into it, but haraam promotions is something important to look into it and its very much common sense!

Anyway you take care; I hope to hear from you soon, Inshallah.

Well theres many things like:

1) Today I got a McDonald food discount booklet (voucher) which makes me eligible for discounted burgers but with McDonalds theres a limited of items we can eat there anyway so most of them are useless to me!

2) During Xmas people send gifts out of goodwill... which in fine but sometimes they send you sweets that are not halal like gelatine and etc... so what would you do here?

3) In business we buy in bulk cheap and sell individual for profit this is halal depending on what your selling. But some people buy stolen goods for cheap and sell them that is haraam.

4) Interest is forbidden yet people say we can just take interest in and give it to the poor but it clearly states we cannot have anything to do with it so why recieve it for the poor... you dont get reward for giving interest to the poor.

5) Theres many examples if you get free things as gifts that are not suitable what do you do with them!]

I hope that makes more sense!

Asalaamu alikum,

When it comes to food, I really feel like it is wrong to throw it away, unless it is something like alcohol or pork, but these things would typically be declined as gifts anyhow, I think.

Example: My son loves to eat marshmellows, but we have to buy them from the halal grocery as all marshmellows available in the chain stores contain geletin. A friend with good intentions brought some of the geletin marshmellows for my son, and the initial reaction was to throw them out, however we decided it will be better to give them to the neighbor boy and just explain we cant have the geletin.

I feel like by doing this we are:

1. not wasting food

2. being nice to neighbors

3. opening the door for discussion into our faith

Thats my solution, although I dont know if it is the best one.

May Allah guide us all to the right path, Ameen

O living in a non Muslim country makes one really learn a lot on how to deal with certain situations.

You know Jennifer, I always wondered what was wrong with marshmellows since a young revert once told me she was seeking halal one. But at that time, I didnt want to drive her off topic and ask her. Thank u for telling me. I never had it anyway, dont know even what it is, I did see it in grocery shops of course when I visited US.

They are basically just fluffy sugar puffs.

SisJen- You raise a scenario that is interesting to think about. Like you said, we should not waste food, dawah etc. Also, the Prophet if given a gift would give it away to someone else if he did not want it.

But then it is haram... This seems outside the realm of MY knowledge for sure. Alhamdulillah, I did not have to make it. May Allah Bless you for your decision, SisJen.

First we should avoid getting harram gifts,if it is impossible I think

we should Throw the gifts we requested not to use or eat (like the harram sweets) in the trash can.

we should give the gifts we requested to get it only by hallal methods (like interest ,some scholars accepted interest as hallal money) to the poors even we dont get reward for doing that

(may Allah reward us),only to use hallal money.
