Question: Does using a puffer for asthma in the mouth during the day in Ramadaan invalidate the fast for one who is suffering difficulty in breathing?.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Using a puffer for asthma during the day in Ramadaan does not invalidate the fast.

The puffer used for asthma does not invalidate the fast because it is a pressurized gas that goes to the lungs, and is not food, and it is something that is always needed, in Ramadaan and at other times.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

This puffer evaporates and does not reach the stomach, so in this case we say that there is nothing wrong with using this puffer when you are fasting, and you do not break your fast by doing that.

The scholars of the Standing Committee said: ,br> The asthma medication that the patient uses by inhaling it reaches the lungs via the trachea and does not reach the stomach, so it is not food or drink or anything of the sort… So it seems that the fast is not broken by using this medicine.

She had an intercourse with her husband during fasting hours, she does not know what she should do. She can not fast two months continuously. She prefers to feed 60 poor people, however she is not sure when she should do that is it during Ramadan or at any time?

A. Copulation is forbidden during fasting hours of Ramadan, it is a major sin. Allah made repentance mandatory in such a case along with making up the day in which copulation occurred. In addition to the major expiation in the form of: A. Free a slave (in case of difficulty either because slavery is not available or the person at fault can not afford to purchase a slave) one may move to the next option. B. Fast two continuous months. In case this option is also not possible. But the difficulty has to be strictly due to health or profession reasons. In other words, one should not be lazy to fast or reluctant to undertake the difficulty associated with the expiation. In such case one may move to. C. Feed 60 poor people. Each day in which copulation occurred stands with an individual expiation. One should try to estimate the number of days when they are unknown to him/her then perform expiation for each day. Q. In regard to the timing of fast breaking is it Sunnah to break immediately at sunset?

A. Yes, fast breaking time in not due until sunset according to the hadeeth” If you observe night falling from here and day light disappeared from here and sunsets, therefore a fasting person may break the fast”. As for those who can not observe sunset, hearing the adhan (call for prayer) marking the time will be sufficient. In case there are some places where it will not be possible to hear an adhan, one may comply with the relevant local time such as Mecca calendar. Therefore, in cases where it is difficult to see the sunset or hear the adhan, local time is used to determine the fast breaking time. Sheikh Saleh Ibn Fawzan Alfawzan 29/5/1422 H.

Q. I have a number of days to be made up for missing Ramadan fasting for a legitimate excuse during previous years. I did not make them up. Now I can not identity the correct number of days due. What can I do and is there a means to make this up?

A. You are mistaken to delay making up the missed days to the extend that you forgot their number. Those days take the position of a debt, which makes it, compulsory to immediately fast them. This debt should not be delayed for any reason. Now as for the problem of forgetting the number of days, you may estimate the number of days taking in consideration to try to be accurate. For example if you were not sure if they were 9 or 10 take the 10 in order to be sure that you fulfilled your duty. Also make sure to start making them up immediately in addition to a ransom by feeding a poor person for each day in order to make up for the delay. Sheikh Saleh Ibn Fawzan Alfawzan.
