while he was saul, he seemed to take delight in doing all sorts of wicked things.. especially to 'christians' .. after the death of jesus for some reason, he supposedly 'hears god' -- "saul, saul, why do you persecute me?" (this is apparently the reason for his conversion.. this is why he gives up his wealth) there's more to it.. but i had to dig.. and so shall you :)
