Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was uninjured in the attack.

An Israeli army spokeswoman declined to comment on whether it was an attempt to kill the group's leader.

In an audio message shortly after the attack Nasrallah declared "open war" on Israel.

"You wanted an open war, you will get an open war," he said.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli air force renewed attacks on a southern suburb of Beirut, targeting a radio station belonging to Hezbollah.

A missile was fired in the vicinity of the Al-Nour station, in the Haret Hreik neighborhood, but missed the facility and struck an apartment in a residential building instead.

The Israeli offensive against Lebanon, in which more than 60 Lebanese have died, follows Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers.

Israeli vessel attacked

Hezbollah has continued rocket attacks on northern Israel, killing four civilians in the last two days.

A mother and daughter died in an attack on the town of Meron on Friday, while two Israelis died in attacks on Thursday.

Several more people were injured in the town of Safed.

An Israeli naval vessel involved in the blockade of Lebanon was also damaged in an attack but there were no reports of casualties.

UN debate

In an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday, Lebanon called for an end to Israel's offensive.

At the meeting, Bashar Jaafari, Syria's ambassador to the UN, complained that he was not allowed to speak.

Jaafari said: "My country is a concerned party, since there have been direct Israeli and American threats against my country.

"In spite of this destabilisation of peace and security in the region, we were not given the right to speak and to address the council by the chair of the Security Council."

During the debate, John Bolton, US ambassador to the UN, said: "Syria and Iran must be held to account for supporting regional terrorism and their role in the current crisis."

The debate ended with no decision on Beirut's demand for a call for an immediate end to Israeli air strikes on its territory.

Bismillah

I pray for peace in the region.

How did this conflict start anyway. I assume that Israel must have done something to provoke the kindnapping of their soldiers? The media here is kind of putting the blame on Hezbollah for starting it. What are you hearing on your part of the world?

I really appreciate that u r aware that western media can be formulated in order to develop a certain public opinion. This is a good indication, a healthy one on your part actually.

It started when an Israeli tanker penetrated into south Lebanon, thus, Hezbollah shot it.

Media asked Hassan Nasrullah whether the penetration was deep enough to require a shooting back, he said, it wouldnt make a difference. By virtue of the international law, as long as we have prisoners in the land of the penetrating state, we are allowed to shoot.

Thus, to make it short for u Israel triggered it.

As for peace, sorry to tell u, but Quran tells us we will be in a larger scale war with them Insh aAllah.

A Muslim views the war from a different perspective.

Issues to ponder over....

Is the recent kidnapping of the soldiers by hizbollah deliberately aimed at escalating the issue of palestine and israel? (two state solution according to the road map)

israel responded to the kidnapping as an "act of war" and wasted no time going on the offensive.

i wonder what the motives are? could it be to get rid of all militant organisations such as hizbollah / hamas and force them into being more political?

will this also get the palestinians to back hamas into accepting israel explicitly? in other words change public opinion as israel has been severely punishing the muslims hence feel there is no other option but to accept the state of israel

When israel goes on the offensive, normally they have a media black out and destroy everything in their path (Jenine and Rafah). But strangely this time they have allowed the media huge coverage.

Egyptian authorities are guarding their "borders" so that muslims from palestine do not cross into it. In other words they will not do anything to help, but at the same time allow for them to be killed by the jews.

The irrelevant and bogus Arab League Summit took place not out of sincerity to the muslims but acting as though it cared begging the UN to do something. When in actual fact it is to dupe the muslims into thinking it is doing something.

America went all the way into Afghanistan after 9/11, but these people cannot go over the border....shame!

Many Arab countries actually are saying that this is all the fault of Hezbollah and they need to end it...such as the Saudis...Link

As an African this is an apartheid struggle against fascist Zionist

As a muslim this is oppression of my brothers n sisters

The debate on who is right and who is wrong will wager on to no end. The only end is the death of either one side or both.

In hillary Clintons view GW Bush n millions of others Israel is innocently protecting themselves from terrorist  who seek to destroy them.

When there is oppression there is a natural and equal re-action.

Just for the record, 59% of the Lebonese population is Muslim and 39% Christian, so any attack on Lebanon is hardly aimed purely at Muslims.

This is correct but the attack is concentrated mostly in Dahia janoubiya(south suburbs) of beirut and South of Lebanon, mostly muslims. yes there are a few christian families living their but those who are being killed are muslims. But anyway Lebanese people are all united now together all sects and relegions, Israel tried to spread turbulence in lebanon but it failed and it will not succeed in its mission.
