Can anyone verify this??? - Muslimah - 04-18-2004

as salam alykom

I received this email, but the info is not confirmed:

Yesterday we had a Muslim brother invited and while we were serving food we had Mountain Dew "Pepsi" on the

table when the brother looked at the ingredients he found that is has a product called Yellow 5 which is made out of pigs.

The brother is a doctor and his

wife is a chemist.

Please be careful about what you

buy from now, every product

that has "Yellow 5" is HARAM

Asalaamu alaikum,

I think the email is bogus...check this out :

http://www.energyenhancement.org/Om%20Aham...e%20numbers.htm

From the website -

E102 - Tartrazine, also known as Food Yellow 4, FD and C Yellow 5, CI 19140. Synthetic, yellow powder, one of the coal-tar dyes. Used as colouring agent. ADI is up to 7.5mg per kg body weight. May cause allergic reaction in susceptible people, particularly those also sensitive to aspirin. Adverse effects include acute bronchospasm, urticaria, rhinitis, blurred vision, oedema and purple patches on the skin.

It's synthetic, so I doubt it actually comes from pigs. Also, check out for some information on Yellow 5 - it's quite interesting the rumours that have been spreading about it [Image: rolleyes.gif]

Hope that helps [Image: smile.gif]

Also, according to the post that Brother Ali posted re: the haram ingredients..E102 is not listed, so if we go with that, E102 is indeed halaal.

spider I am not sure if u went to the url yourself, it was too Obscene(astagh)

Asalaamu alaikum,

My apologies sister, I didn't actually read the article, but just by looking at the url..the site I mentioned is a very reputable one for debunking urban myths and fake stories floating around on the internet. I just saw the "toxins" part and assumed it was just something to the effect that Yellow 5 was toxic when it in fact has passed FDA.

I am usually much more careful when citing url's. Forgive my lapse [Image: wink.gif]
