Salaam Aleikum? - Peace in Ireland - 06-13-2004

I may have alreayd asked this question, but here it goes. What, exactly, does Salaam Aleikum (sorry for the spelling) mean? I use it a lot to greet muslims, but I have no clue what I'm actually saying. Also, is it just for hellos or can you use it for goodbyes? And one more, I've heard some people just say "Salaam" instead of the whole thing. Is that any different than Salaam Aleikum? There, I'm done.

Salam Peace in Ireland

Salam Basically means= Peace

Asalamalaykum means= "Peace be upon you."

Asalamalaykum Wa Rahmatullah means= "May the peace and the Mercy of Allah be upon you," 

"Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu means=

:"May the peace, the mercy, and the blessings of Allah be upon you."

Yes You can say this when your greeting someone for the first time, or when you are leaving.

You can use all of those terms.

If you don't mind I want to tell you this as well

When someone says Asalamalaykum the other person has to return the greeting by saying Walaykuma salam warah matulahi wabarakatu which means May the peace, the mercy, and the blessings of Allah be upon you too

But if someone says just salam then its up to you, you can say just salam back or say Asalamalaykum which will earn you more rewards. Whereas if someone says Asalamalaykum its not nice to just say salam back. [Image: biggrin.gif]

As Salam is also one of the 99 names of Allah. So it is not just regular peace that is being invoked upon that person.

I will quote Dan, just felt I wanted to be involved, Names and Attributes of Allah are my favourite topic.

Peace, more on the same topic, Allah's Names and Attibutes are not only restricted on the 99 sort of commonly known. Allah Has many other Names and Attributes that are either included in Quran like for example malek yawome deen, DhiTawl, Rubel A`rsh, which are mentioned in Quran and not included in the famous hadeeth of the 99.

Other Names and Attributes Allah taught to certain people like the one who was able to bring Queen Belqais throne to where Prophet Soliman was in a blink of an eye. While there are even other Names and Attributes Allah Kept in His Knowledge only.

What is more important than knowing them by heart is feeling them and knowing that we live through them. In other words, one of Allah's Attributes is Al Qayoum, which translates as One Who sustains and protects all that exists, for instance, through this Name, both believers and non believers benefit. It is the right of the servants over their Lord to sustain and protect all of them, in this regard Allah treats us all equally, we have the right to be protected for example from skies falling down on our heads or the eath going soft under our feet, so He is Qayyoum of skies and earth as well. It is our right regardless of our belief to receive sufficient sustains to keep us alive. I can go on for ever talking about Names and Attributes of Allah, but dont want to prolong the post and get u overwhelmed Peace [Image: smile.gif]

according to the muslim comedian in one of the threads "salaam aleikum" prounounced that way which arabic speakers know means " death be upon you" so be sure to prounounce it right .... like in college when one of my non muslim teachers who once pronounced it that way was met with the reply from my friend as " same to you sir !! so we can all go home early !..................

Suhail when it means death be upon u, it is prononounced sam without a lam
