Attacks on Palestinian schoolchildren by Jewish settlers continue in the southern West Bank.

On Saturday, messianic settlers affiliated with the Gush Emunim movement (block of faithful) from the small colony of Maon south of Hebron assaulted Palestinian children with stones twice, injuring four children.

One child suffered a head injury, according to Palestinian sources.

The settlers attacked children first in the morning when they went to school and again in the afternoon as they returned home.

The Israeli security forces did not arrest any of the attackers.

Settler strategy

The settlers, whose ultimate goal is to coerce Palestinian villagers to abandon their land, have in recent days escalated their attacks on Palestinians, especially the inhabitants of the small village of Tuwani.

Last week, children from the neighbouring village of Tuba were attacked by settlers on their way back from school.

The children waited at least three hours for an Israeli army escort as settlers blocked the road.

None of the settlers was arrested.

"They (the settlers) were carrying stones, clubs and some sharp objects. They behaved in a way suggesting that they would want to slaughter the children. These people are really sick," said Ahmed Hasan, the father of one of the stranded children.

In Hebron, Jewish settlers have been attacking Palestinian schoolchildren, especially in the vicinity of a Jewish settler building on the western edge of the old town, known as Dabboya.

Volunteers attacked

A fortnight ago, 15 settlers attacked the Cordoba (Cordova) Girls school. Students of the school are normally escorted by foreign peace volunteers.

According to two volunteers - Karin Laier from Germany and Tore Ottsen from Norway - the settlers threw stones at the girls and the volunteers. Laier and Ottsen were hit.

Three other peace activists working with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) were attacked by the same group of settlers. A 79-year-old activist was among those assaulted.

On April 1, settlers assaulted and seriously injured Silvana Hogg, a Swiss activist.

According to the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel, which sends international volunteers to accompany Palestinian schoolchildren to and from school, the latest incidents are part of a wave of settler attacks in the region around Hebron.

The Israeli occupation army said it is doing everything it can to maintain law and order.

"The armed forces do everything they could to maintain the peace. However, settler behaviours and possible attacks on Palestinians and foreigners are for the police to deal with," a local Israeli civil administration official to Al Jazeera.net.

Israeli inaction

Arif al Jabari, the governor of Hebron, accused the army of "effectively conspiring with the settlers against the Palestinians".

"You see this city has an Arab population of 182,000 Arabs and some 450 fanatic Jewish settlers. The Israeli army, which deploys hundreds if not thousands of troops here, knows very well what the settlers are doing but does next to nothing to stop them.

"And when the victims go to the Israeli police to complain, they are told to produce miraculous evidence that would indict the settlers, like the name of the settlers involved in the attacks, their ID numbers."

Settler leaders in Hebron declined to be interviewed for this report.

Three Christian teenage girls were beheaded in an assault that marks an escalation of the violence against non-Muslims in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province.

The three high school students were found with their heads severed early Saturday in the sectarian-divided town of Poso, said provincial police spokesman Rais Adam.

The girls were believed to have been murdered while they walked to school, Adam said Saturday.

He said two of the victims' heads were found near a police post while the third was discovered outside a Christian church in Poso.

Muslim extremists have been linked to bombings, shootings and other attacks targeting Christians in the Poso area over the last two years but these appear to be the first recent beheadings.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono strongly condemned the beheadings, a tactic used periodically by insurgents in Muslim southern Thailand.

"I condemn this inhumane murder, whoever the perpetrators are and whatever their motives," the president was quoted as saying by Detikcom online news service.

Another teenage student girl was wounded in the attack, said national police spokesman Ariyanto Budiarjo.

But the girl, who was hacked in her upper chest, told police the killings were carried out by six men clad in black and wearing face masks.

Police earlier detained eight men after they refused to have their car searched at a checkpoint, said Budiarjo, but he would not say whether those men were connected to the killings.

Poso has seen several home-made bomb explosions in the past month which caused minimal damage and no casualties.

In May a pair of bomb attacks killed 22 people at a market in the neighbouring coastal town of Tentena.

Police said the Tentena bombings were the work of Islamic militants with possible links to Jemaah Islamiyah, which authorities say has some ties to Al-Qaeda. Others say the attack was politically motivated.

Authorities have linked JI to numerous deadly bombings elsewhere in Indonesia.

Last December a Christian priest was critically injured when unidentified attackers slashed him with machetes in Poso ahead of Christmas services, police said. On the same day south of the provincial capital Palu, to the west of Poso, two Christians died in a machete attack.

Among other violence last year was the assassination of a Christian prosecutor who handled terrorism cases in Palu.

In July last year gunmen sprayed bullets into a Palu church, killing a woman priest and injuring four other people.

In the worst bloodshed of 2003, armed gangs in October killed 10 people in attacks on mainly Christian villages.

A report last year by the International Crisis Group think-tank blamed many of the Christian deaths in Poso on Mujahidin KOMPAK, an outfit with loose affiliations to the Jemaah Islamiyah.

Budiarjo said security at checkpoints in and around Poso was tightened after the beheadings.

"We hope that the public will not be provoked by this incident because this is clearly an act of provocation," the police spokesman said.

Yudhoyono dispatched national police chief Sutanto and armed forces chief Endriartono Sutarto to Poso to "control the situation and hold dialogues" with local community leaders.

"Find and arrest the perpetrators and charged them with the existing law," Yudhoyono was quoted as saying.

Where do you get your news??? Did not the Israeli government just hand over some disputed territory to Palestine? Do you never notice the good news?

It's funny that you bring up crimes of the Israeli government and endorsed by the christian governements. (The US government does not endorse the stoning of children)

How do you equate "Occupied" with "disputed"?

The land was occupied 50 years ago (1967) and the Jews are trying to keep it. The only dispute is whether a theif is entitled to his spoils?

What good news? Someone steals your land, gives one peice back (Gaza) whilst rapidly building more settlements and a 'fence' on palestinian land in the west Bank and is building another 'fence' to steal the entire fertile Jericho Valley which is EAST of the West Bank area and leave the muslims sitting on a pile of rocks? What evil people you truly are.

Iraq was pretty oil rich last time I checked. It's not our fault that their government didn't spread the weatlh amongst it's citizens. Iraq's defunct leader lived in dozens of $50,000,000 palaces as did his family. You don't think that Saddam's tyranical rule had anything to do with the poverty in his lands????

The Americans and British placed a total embargo on medicine and food. This resulted, said the Red Cross, in the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children in the first 5 years.

You make it sound like America and G.B. are the only places in the world from which food and drugs come. Most of the food I eat doesn't even come from America.

CNN hates America almost as much as you do. They spew those non-sensical statistics all day long.

I do know that the Baath party starved and mass killed the kurds. Perhaps those are the 500,000 children you speak of???

I thought life was great with Sadaam before the invasion? All of a sudden, when it suits you, 100,000 children were dying/year. I keep hearing how Iraq was a better place to live when Sadaam was in power...somehow, your claim doesn't add up.

Plus Farris Mee, you ignore the fact that the Baath party could of EASILY ended the embargos by allowing inspections and complete disclosure of their weapons situation. Would Iraq have had an embargo had they not invaded Kuwait???? WHOS FAULT IS THAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

It's not like Iraq was just minding it's own business and we came along and slapped an embargo on them. I guess you forgot that Iraq's government had tried to take over Kuwait...I guess you don't care about the Muslims that they killed.
