The new Islamic year 1428 A.H. started over the weekend.

readers. Let us make a concerted effort to keep track of Islamic
dates throughout the year and try to make it more a part of our
day-to-day lives. Muharram, the first month, is one of the four
Sacred months that Allah mentions in the Qur'an (9:36). Fasting
on the Day of 'Âshûrâ (10th Muharram) is highly recommended. It
is also encouraged to fast on consecutive days, i.e. the 9th and
10th or 10th and 11th of Muharram.

A two-part course on Fiqh al-Mu'âmalât delivered by Shaykh Nizam

Abdulkadir Barkatulla (UK Shariah Advisory Board Scholar), and
Shaykh Haytham Tamim (Utrujj Foundation Scholar).
The Shariah based finance industry is one of the fastest-growing
markets in the world and is estimated to be worth between £200 to
£300 billion globally. Last year, UK Treasury Officials announced
plans to make UK and London 'a leading centre for Islamic Finance'.
In a globalising world, British Muslims have a unique position as
the "Gateway for trade with the Islamic world" and to prepare for
this, Utrujj have organised further introductory courses covering
basic elements of Islamic Finance for students of finance and
those Muslim professionals within the financial sector.
Course Contents: Contents: General Introduction to Contracts and
Islam, Divisions in Islamic Fiqh, Ijarah (lease/rent) , Bay'ah
(selling), Mudarabah, Musharakah (partnership) , Common Errors
in Rransactions, Islamic Banking, Etiquettes of Business, Rules
of a Business Contract, Basic Rules of Sale, and the Issue of
Riba (interest) and its various strands.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
* Recognise the importance of seeking knowledge of Islamic Fiqh
* Outline the main divisions within Islamic Law
* Understand the necessary etiquettes of Islamic transactions
* Explain some of the evidences from the Qur'an and Sunnah
relating to business transactions
* List some of the cautionary measures that need to be taken
into account when dealing in business
* Follow the Islamic principles pertaining to halal and haram
in business
* Explain the rulings relating to Riba (Interest)
* Learn about the spirit of Islamic transactions according to
Qur'anic teachings.
Shaykh Nizam Yaquby is one of the world leading scholars on the Fiqh of
Muamalat [islamic Finance]. He has a Ph.D. on Islamic Law from the
University
of Wales and BA in Economics & Comparative Religion from McGill
University,
Montreal. He has studied Traditional Islamic Studies under the guidance
of
eminent Islamic scholars, among them: Shaikh ‘Abdullah al-Farisi
(Bahrain),
Sh. Yusuf al-Siddiqi (Bahrain), Sh. Muhammad Saleh al-‘Abbasi
(Bahrain),
Sh. Muhammad Yasin al-Fadani (Mecca), Sh. Muhammad Khatir (Egypt),
Sh. Habib-ur-Rahman Azmi (India), Sh. Abdullah b. al-Siddiq al-Ghumari
(Morroco) and many other scholars. He has been a Khatib in many masjids
and has been teaching, lecturing Islamic subjects such as Tafsir,
Hadith
and Fiqh for the last 30 years and has written many publications. Some

them include; Risalah fi al-Tawbah (in Arabic) ; Qurrat al-‘Aynayn fi
