Asalaamu alikum,

Somebody asked me this question recently and I was not sure how to answer so I thought I would run it by a few of you and see your idea.

We know that it is not permissible for the women to pluck their eyebrows. And the hadith specifically says plucking. However there is a commercial product now called a personal trimmer or something that removes hair especially for eyebrows and removes hair from the surface, There is no plucking involved.

And what she was asking is that since she heard it is not permitted to use a moist towel like a baby wipe to clean up after using the bathroom because the hadith talks about running water. She was saying isnt this similar because the hadith involves plucking.

I never had any obsession with my eyebrows so I have never put any thought into it. The point is to not change the shape, right? Its not about the method of removal but the removal itself???

Jazak Allah khairn

See Jennifer, Sobhan Allah, I had just read a long research on this issue on the Egyptian Dar Iftaa web site, because I kept hearing differnet views. However, I didnt find it translated. It is a really long and comprehensive research. But I will only give you the conclusion.

1. Regarding the meaning of Nams according to scholars (Shafi, Hanafi, Malki and Hanbali), it varies between hair removal from eye brows or face in general using plucking.

2. Not any hair removal is considered Nams.

3. It is premissible for a male or female to remove the extra hair harmful to the person, and this is not considered Nams.

4. Nams is eye brows hair removal and lightening and from the face as well.

5. Nams in general is forbidden. However, the weighted opinion, is that it is permissible for the married woman with her husband's permission.

This is what I found, not sure if this helped, I know you were inquiring about the Hukum whether it applies on the removal or method of removal. Well, may be we can dig more. But currently I think this will solve her problem. In other words, if she is married, she can go for it with her husband's permission.

Jazak Allah khairn sister,

I know it takes alot of time to translate things and I appreciate it so much!

Actually no, she is not married. I see a group of young sisters in the masjid time to time and this is a concern for them, fashion conscience as they are.

My instinct tell me this would be wrong, but I can see their point.

I wonder how it can be it will be any different for a married woman versus a non married woman. I thought we are supposed to obey are husband unless what he asks is haram. Can a married sister have tattoos also with her husbands permission?

Jazak Allah khairn :)

I dont think tattoos is permissible at all.

Let me re read your question and see if I did provide the proper answer, given the fact that she is not married. But I think this makes it Haram because they are not married. Actually, I strictly translated the conclusion of the research for you.

Asalaamu alikum

I know I make alot of work for you, but really I am so curious how it can be a different ruling between married and unmarried, I mean what am I missing here? Do you know how they arrived to this conclusion? I cant tell alot of teenage girls this without expecting them to ask the same thing.

I know you are busy sis, please take your time.

Love, Jennifer
