MUSLIM MARRIAGE EVENT - THE WAY FORWARD - Muslimah - 08-09-2003 Islamic Circles Matrimonial Service Presents: MUSLIM MARRIAGE EVENT - THE WAY FORWARD Date: Saturday 16th August 2003 Time: 12 noon til 6pm Venue: Froud Centre, 1 Toronto Avenue (at junction with Romford Rd), Manor Park, London E12 5JF The "shaadi (marriage) season" is here and the question in your mind might be, "When will I get married?" The last event held in March 2003 dealt with various marriage related issues that Muslims born and bred in the UK face, some of which were controversial and people would rather sweep under the carpet. Experienced Muslim marriage counsellors, as well as an 'aalim and a psychotherapist were invited to the event. The audience participated in workshops, group discussions and feedback sessions. Interested participants were also introduced via a unique card profiling system where Islamic etiquettes were maintained. Alhamdulillah a few marriages have already taken place as a result. Unfortunately due to time constraints solutions could not be discussed in detail. Quite often all we do is just complain, moan and sometimes discuss the difficulties associated with trying to find someone to get married to. We can discuss and discuss until the cows come home but how do we practically deal with these issues? We are now pleased to announce a bigger and better organised event with more emphasis on providing solutions. . There will be a special session in Urdu and Bengali for parents and guardians, plus opportunities for introductions to take place. . The whole community centre has been hired, where there will be a mixture of small group workshops and larger plenary sessions for feedback. . This event is not just for 'hijabis' and "religious" people. EVERYONE is welcome, including ex-clubbers, ex-drinkers, etc. What are the SOLUTIONS for the following problems in our society? 1. How to encourage brothers to stop being pansies and start being real men, and marry sisters HERE in the UK. 2. You want to marry someone but your PARENTS are the main obstacle. 3. What is wrong with DIVORCEES - how can they get married? 4. I want to meet someone in a 'halal' way. How is this possible? Many so-called 'halal' marriage services are arranging so-called halal events for Muslims but unfortunately the most "halal" aspect might be just the meat and they still fail to address the key issues within the Muslim community, if not all of them! * Perhaps you meet someone that you like but you can't get married to them because of X,Y,Z. What do you do? * Do you feel comfortable sitting round a dinner table with 5-10 members of the opposite sex and then deciding who your partner for life will be? Be honest with yourselves! * Or perhaps you've heard about the recently publicised Speed Intros service where you meet upto 30 "professional" muslims in one night. Chatting to 30 different members of the opposite sex for five minutes each in a single evening. * What about going for Muslim 'guys and gals' picnics and paintballing in mixed groups? Okay, there is definitely a problem with people finding partners these days but have we become that desperate?! * Do you want an event that would not only provide SOLUTIONS but where you could also meet your POTENTIAL MATCH, insha'Allah? * Do you want an event where parents should be explained what their rights & limitations are? * Are you a divorcee who wants to be given a chance? * Are you fed up of websites, paid & free marriage services ? * Are you fed up of talks on marriage & discussions on Asian radio & TV stations which don't offer solutions, just mere chat? * Are you sick and tired of "incestuous" and "nepotistic" mosque and organisation based services, where you have to be "in with the boys" or "chummy" with committee/shura members to even get a chance of someone helping you. And if you're a revert, then you might as well forget it! * Are you fed up with these pretentious "halal" singles evenings in posh restaurants? What has the actual outcome been? Practically zilch! * "My parents ALWAYS bring the WRONG person?" * "I am a revert - I don't know where to start?" * "We have very few friends and family contacts - where can we go?" * You don't practice but your heart is in Islam and want to find someone who is Muslim - so called practicing people don't bother helping because they look down on you or are just "too pious" and just "too busy being active in da’wah" (yeah right). Invited 'Qualified' Facilitators Include: * Mufti Abdul Karim Barakatulla (Senior Imam, Finchley Mosque, London) * Sister Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood (Author of The Muslim Marriage Guide and several other books) * Brother Ajmal Masrur (Marriage Counsellor) * Sister Sarah Sheriff (Author of Women's Rights in Islam) * Brother Shahnawaz Haque (Muslim Psychotherapist) * 'Alimah Barakatulla (Wife of Mufti Abdul Karim Barakatulla) * Sister Najma Ebrahim (Muslim Women's Helpline) * Brother Zahoor Qureshi (Islamic Society of Britain) * Sister Sufia Amin(Young Muslims UK) It is mandatory to bring one or both parents. If this is not possible, then someone who would be able to influence the parents. Why is this? Because research has shown that parents are half the problem. If you don't have parents or a wali or you are a revert then you can of course still come. Divorcees are most welcome. No passport and asylum seekers please. Failure to comply with these requirements will mean no registration or no entrance to the event. Cost: £10 per person. * Unfortunately no children allowed on this occasion. * Pre-registration is compulsory, either by e-mail or phone. * Bookstalls available * Refreshments available DIRECTIONS TO VENUE: Nearest Rail: Manor Park (From Liverpool Street) Nearest Tube: East Ham (District Line) Buses: 25, 86, 147 http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=54...9&z=1&sv=542750 Road: From the A406 (North Circular), turn off at Ilford and go towards Central London along the A118 (Romford Road).
