US Trapped in The "Intervention Paradox" In Libya

The US "intervened" in Libya, it said, for humanitarian reasons. A massacre was allegedly about to take place in Benghazi, US airpower prevented that from happening.

The hope was that the rebel forces would quickly regain the initiative, over-run Col. Qaddafi's forces and take control of the country. The US and its Nato allies could then recede from view and allow whatever happened next to happen.

Predictably, it didn't work out that way, leaving the United States in the "intervention paradox." Stephen Walt explains:

Because there are no vital strategic interests at stake in the Libyan situation, outside leaders are reluctant to do whatever it takes to resolve the situation quickly. You don't hear Obama, Sarkozy, or Cameron declaring that they are going to call up reserves, redeploy forces from other commitments, or launch a direct invasion of Libya itself. They know that that mission isn't worth it, and that their own populations would quickly question the wisdom of such a massive operation.

Instead, intervening powers try to use as little force as possible, and seek to minimize their own casualties above all.....

The other option, of course, is to use overwhelming force from the very beginning. Qaddafi's loyal forces might be effective against a poorly-trained rebel army, but they would be no match for a sizeable NATO force. But this isn't really the answer either, even if we had such forces readily available (and remember, the United States is already bogged down in other places). For one thing, doing it this way is a lot more expensive, and you're likely to lose some of your own people along the way. And once you've ousted the regime you own the country, and trying to put a society like Libya back together again would not be easy or cheap (see under: Iraq, Afghanistan)....

Hence the paradox: if you go in light you get a protracted stalemate; if you go in big you end up with a costly quagmire. Under these circumstances you can understand why the intervening powers are tiptoeing their way in, but as noted above, that merely increases the danger that the civil war drags on.

.WikiLeaks reveals US blunders at Guantanamo
Posted by: Muslimah - 04-25-2011, 05:54 PM - Forum: Current Affairs - Replies (1)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States has botched the handling of inmates at Guantanamo, holding men for years without reliable evidence while releasing others who posed a grave threat, according to leaked secret documents.

The trove of classified files released by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks showed US officials struggling with often flawed evidence and confused about the guilt or innocence of detainees held at the prison at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, media reported Monday.

Hundreds of inmates who turned out to have no serious terror links were held without trial, based on vague or inaccurate information, including accounts from unreliable fellow detainees or statements from men who had been abused or tortured, the New York Times quoted the documents as saying.

One poor Afghan farmer with no ties to militants was held for two years without trial in a case of mistaken identity, the documents showed.

But US authorities in 2004 decided to release Abdullah Mehsud, a Taliban extremist who duped his interrogators into believing he had been conscripted by the insurgents as a driver.

"Detainee does not pose a future threat to the US or US interests," said a 2003 document, quoted by the Times.

Mehsud, who gave a false name to his American interrogators, was sent back to Afghanistan where he organized a Taliban unit to assault US troops, planned an attack on Pakistan's interior ministry that claimed 31 lives, oversaw the kidnapping of two Chinese engineers and set off a suicide bomb in 2007 in Pakistan -- winning praise from Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

President Barack Obama's administration, which has struggled to close the controversial Guantanamo prison, denounced the "unfortunate" release of the classified documents, part of a massive cache of secret memos leaked to WikiLeaks last year.

The government said in a statement the Obama and Bush administrations had "made every effort to act with the utmost care and diligence in transferring detainees from Guantanamo."

The New York Times was among a group of US and European media outlets that obtained the 779 secret documents, including The Washington Post, National Public Radio, The Daily Telegraph, El Pais, Le Monde, Der Spiegel and La Repubblica.

In another revelation, one document reportedly showed that a top detainee, senior Al-Qaeda commander Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, claimed that a nuclear bomb had been hidden somewhere in Europe to be detonated if bin Laden is ever caught or killed.

At least 150 detainees brought to Guantanamo were innocent Afghans or Pakistanis, including drivers, farmers and chefs, according to The Daily Telegraph.

They were rounded up as part of frantic intelligence-gathering in war zones and then detained at the US naval base in southeastern Cuba for years due to incorrect information or simply for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, the British daily said.

Overall, US military analysts considered only 220 of all the suspects detained at Guantanamo to be dangerous extremists.

Another 380 were deemed to be low-ranking foot soldiers who traveled to Afghanistan or were part of the Taliban, the Telegraph wrote.

In dozens of cases, senior US commanders were said to have concluded that there was "no reason recorded for transfer" to Guantanamo Bay.

However, about a third of the 600-some men who have been transferred to third countries from Guantanamo were branded "high-risk" before being released or handed to other governments, The New York Times said.

Of the 172 prisoners who remain at Guantanamo, 130 have been rated as posing a "high-risk" threat.

The Times said the files, which detail the background of each of the 779 people who have passed through the prison facility since 2002, revealed little about harsh interrogation tactics reportedly used at Guantanamo that sparked widespread condemnation around the world.

Abu `Abdil Kareem

Ibn Hazm, rahimahullaah, said, "One hour of neglect can undo a year of pious effort" ["In Pursuit of Virtue", point #93]. I think this is a very scary thought.

Shaytaan will sometimes let a worshipper worship long and hard, but will seek a way to nullify his deeds in a way that the worshipper may not notice. It is related in al-Baihaqi's "Branches of Faith", that the big shaytaan sends his army to deceive worshippers, and tells them to first look at the food he eats. If his food is not halaal, then "let him worship long and hard," since shaytaan knows that prayers of one who eats haraam are not accepted. So the worshipper will work hard and think he is doing good, while his efforts may not be accepted. This is similar to those about whom Allaah ta`aalaa says, "Say: Shall We inform you who will be the greatest losers by their works? Those whose effort goes astray in the life of the world, and they reckon that they do good work." [18:103-104] A brother once told me that a Muslim scholar once said that no verse causes fear in him more than this one.

I think there is many lessons we can learn from this. One is that we must keep our hearts alive by remembering Allaah subhaanahu wa ta`aalaa at all times. Another one is that we must seek knowledge of our religion so as to be certain about the correctness of our actions. Also, most importantly, we must realize our dependance on Allaah ta`aalaa and His guidance. Whoever He guides there is no one to misguide, and whoever He misguides there is none to guide. Unless Allaah is Merciful with us and grants us taufeeq (guidance) to do rightheous acts, we shall never be able. Therefore we have to strive to improve our worship and our character and supplicate to Allaah for guidance. Then, in shaa' Allaah, we will be from among those about whom Allaah says,

"As for those who strive hard in Us (Our cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allaah's Religion)."[29:69]

May Allaah guide us and give us steadfastness in religion. One can find a number of ways that can potentially ruin one's many acts - for example, missing a single prayer, uttering something inappropriate, or reading a horoscope.

Please pay attention and do this exersice to improve

Seek out the Benefit (Salat 101)

“Seek out that which benefits you, seek help only from Allah and never say you can’t do it…” - Saheeh Muslim

GEMS

If you are sincere and you want to really increase the quality of your salat – seek out the means of doing so!

Don’t forget that help comes only from Allah…so trust in Him and Him Alone

Having trust in Allah means working, rolling up your sleeves, and grinding it out

You can increase the quality of your prayers, know you can, regardless of the obstacles that stand in your way

A basic rule: You cannot reach your destination if you don’t know where you are! How are you going to get to Toronto if you don’t where you’re starting from? Therefore, follow the steps below to get yourself started on this journey.

Step 1: Take the time right now to give yourself a rating from 1-10 on the quality of your salat.

Step 2: Brainstorm factors (~10) which are necessary for you to attain ihsan in your prayers. For example:

fard prayers

sunnah prayers

punctuality

concentration

praying in masjid w/ congregation

Step 3: Give yourself a rating from 1-10 on each factor.

Step 4: From the list, choose 2-3 factors you want to work on for the next two weeks

Step 5: Monitor these factors and your overall quality of salat frequently until you reach your Don’t brush this off as nothing! If you are committed and sincere…do the exercise now…work comes with the territory.

We ask Allah to accept our worship and our repentance. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, Allah will appoint a way out for him. And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And if any one puts his trust in Allah, Allah will be sufficient for him.

Remember... Allah, subhana watala, sees everything we do!

Increase your knowledge and your patience will increase, insha'Allah.

Lay not on us a burden like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins and grant us forgiveness.
