  ALHAMDULILLAH
Posted by: mohsie - 05-15-2005, 12:59 AM - Forum: Islam - Replies (1)

Yesterday, the khutbah at my mosque was about the word ALHAMDULILLAH... being thankful to Allah, for the bad, as well as the good. The Arabic word "Hamd" meaning "Praise" is a word used ONLY for thanking Allah... And it is just so good to be grateful to Allah for EVERYTHING. Remember that the first word of the Holy Qur'an is "ALHAMDULILLAH" ... If we can't live by that one word, how will we ever be able to live by the whole Qur'an, the Book of Allah?

Another part of the khutbah was about love. Allah gave us the love for our families (Mashallah! Nothing good like spending a good day with your family, spending time together, bonding etc. May Allah bless our families and help us all stay together in love and in harmony. Ameen.), our careers, and love for money... yes that is from Allah too! Yet, Shaitaan uses it the most to misguide us from the Path of Allah. We ARE expected to live in this world, have a career, earn money, and enjoy life in general. However, we should NEVER EVER forget that all these things are temporary. They have just been loaned to us by Allah as a "free trial". If we use these things correctly, in the way specified by Allah, and we ALWAYS remember to thank Him, then we will inshallah be able to have these things permanently in the Hereafter...

  A convert in 1882
Posted by: amma - 05-14-2005, 09:26 PM - Forum: Islam - Replies (1)

Shaykh Abdullah Quilliam

William Henry Quilliam was born in 1856, Liverpool, as the son of a watch manufacturer Robert Quilliam, and a descendant of Captain John Quilliam RN, who was First Lieutenant on HMS Victory with Nelson. He qualified as a solicitor and established the largest advocacy practice in the North. In 1882 Quilliam visited southern France to recover from overwork and crossed over to Algeria and Morocco. There he learned about Islam and at the age of 31 proclaimed himself to be Muslim.

He returned to Liverpool in 1889 to spread Islam as Sheikh Abdullah Quilliam. Converts included his sons, prominent scientists and professionals. His mother was a Methodist activist until 1893 when at the age of 63 she converted. Local Muslims gave her the title Khadijah (Mother of the Faithful). After accepting Islam, Quilliam was reported to have attended court dressed in full Turkish regalia and as travelling on a white Arab horse! Quilliam set up a prayer and meeting room with the community in Mount Vernon Street. He managed to publish three editions of The Faith of Islam which was subsequently translated into thirteen languages. Quilliam became famous throughout the Islamic world. The Sultan of Turkey made him Sheikh-Ul-Islam of Britain and his son became British Consul General in Turkey. The Sultan of Morocco made him an Alim and the Shah of Persia also appointed him as Consul. A gift of £2,500 was donated to the community by the Sultan of Afghanistan.

This was used to establish the Islamic Institute and Liverpool Mosque in Broughton Terrace, Liverpool. A hundred Muslims could pray there. The Friday Prayer sermons were both in English and Arabic. In the basement the group set up a printing press and commenced publishing The Crescent weekly and a monthly journal, The Islamic Review which was later distributed to over twenty countries worldwide. Nearly two thousand illegitimate births occurred annually in Liverpool during this period and many women turned to the Institute for help. To counter this growing problem, Quilliam founded the Medina Home to care for children and to find them foster families. The Institute also started a Muslim College with courses for Muslims and non-Muslims in arts, science and law. Teachers included Professor Haschem Wilde and Professor Nasrullah Warren. A weekly Debating and Literary Society attracted many non-Muslims. They were also invited to the Institute for prayers and sermons on Sunday.

There was singing from Quilliam's collection of hymns for English-speaking Muslims. These meetings brought a hundred and fifty non-Muslims to Islam by 1896! Quilliam continually faced opposition, arguing for everything from the right to make the public call to prayer to British interference in the Sudan. As his success increased - so did the level of harassment. The muezzin of the mosque was often pelted with snowballs, stones and dirt. Firecrackers were thrown at the mosque and glass was ground into the carpets to cut the feet of the worshippers. The Church and elements of the media in particular were quite antagonistic. On one occasion a group of local Baptists stood up in the middle of one of Abdullah Quilliam's sermons to preach in what they referred to as the "heathen temple".

The leader of the band said that Quilliam was "...a man sent by the devil to deceive you and lead you into the eternal fire where the worm dieth not" and pointing to the fez caps on the heads of the members of the congregation,

stated "and these are the regimentals worn by his soldiers." In a Christian journal, 'The Crusader', Quilliam was described as "this arch -infidel and renegade from the Christian faith" and was pronounced as proof of possession by the devil. Quilliam had the courage and the audacity to openly criticise the imperialist policies of the Government and denounced the colonisation and suppression of foreign territories:- "An American explodes a bomb in the crowded streets of Constantinople and slays innocent women and children and , because he calls himself a Christian he is extolled in England as a hero and as a patriot! An Afghan fights for his fatherland in the Khyber Pass, and because he is a Muslim he is denounced as a traitor and a rebel, and his land is to be raided and his wives and children slain. Such is the British Christian logic at the end of the 19th Century in the diamond jubilee year of the reign of the Queen Empress." The group suffered indignities because the adoption of Islam implied a rejection of Queen and country in the eyes of the wider community - especially at a time when the Empire was at loggerheads with the Ottoman Caliphate.

As well as having the ability to write authoritatively on Christianity and Judaism, Quilliam was a remarkable visionary:- "At the present time union is more than ever necessary among Muslims. The Christian powers are proposing a new crusade to shatter the Muslim powers, under the pretext that they desire to civilise the world. This is nothing but hypocrisy, but armed as they are with the resources of Western civilisation it will be impossible to resist them unless Muslims stand united as one solid phalanx." Within 30 years of this statement, the Khilafah was destroyed. Quilliam left for the East in 1908 and in his absence the Mosque and the Institute declined.

The mosque on Brougham Terrace is now the Registry for Births, Deaths and Marriages. On October 10 1997, Patricia Gordon, the granddaughter of Shaykh Abdullah Quilliam unveiled a plaque in the building to honour the founding of the oldest mosque in Britain and to celebrate the events that happened there. In an emotional address she recalled: " My greatest memory of him, is being compassionate at all times, a man of great courage and way ahead of his time, and a credit to Islam. He gave me an understanding of human emotions and frailties, in fact a catalogue of everything of everything one would wish to see in us all."

ISLAM : The Religion Of Life

Oh, Allah: lead me onward,

Nor let my footsteps fall,

While marching to the graveside,

That waiteth there for all.

Smooth thou the rugged pathway,

That lead toward the goal,

To which each pious Muslim,

Directs his heart and soul.

Protect me when in danger,

In sorrow comfort give,

Al-Hafiz, God Preserver! It is by Thee we live.

And when my life be over,

And all my race is run,

Al-Jannah be my portion Al-Latif, Gracious One!

- by Shaykh Abdullah Quilliam, published in The Crescent, December 1895.

  Age of Aisha (Radiallahu Anhu)
Posted by: Zainab - 05-11-2005, 12:34 AM - Forum: Islam - Replies (3)

Bismillah .. Salaam Alaikum, dear brothers and sisters

The following article was forwarded to me by a friend with extensive knowledge of Islamic history. Based on the various evidences of history as quoted below, many modern Muslim historians & scholars conclude that at the time of her marriage, Aisha (RA) was about sixteen years old, and not six or seven, as commonly narrated. The following quotes and concrete evidences from history provide enough proof of this fact.

AGE OF AISHA (RADIALLAHU ANHU) AT THE TIME OF HER MARRIAGE.

Often a disputed subject, I hope this information can remove the common concerns people raise. And Allah Almighty is the source of truth.

To begin with, it should be the responsibility of those who believe that Aisha’s marriage took place at age nine, to provide a few examples or historical evidences to substantiate their point of view. I have not yet been able to find a single dependable instance in the books of Arab history where any girl below the age of ten was given away in marriage. Unless such examples are given, we do not have any reasonable grounds to believe that it really was the social tradition.

In my opinion, the age of Aisha (RA) has been grossly misreported in the Ahadeeth. It clearly seems that the narratives reporting Aisha’s age during her marriage are not only unreliable, but also on the basis of many other historical evidences, very unlikely. Hence, let us analyze this issue and look at it from an objective stand-point.

- Most of such narratives are only by Hisham ibn ‘urwah reporting on the authority of his father. An event as well-known as this, should logically have been reported by more people than just one, two or three.

- It is quite strange that no one from Madinah where Hisham ibn ‘urwah lived the first 71 years of his life has narrated the event, even though in Madinah his pupils included people as famous as Malik ibn Anas. All the narratives of this event have been reported by narrators from Iraq where Hisham is reported to have had moved after living in Madinah for 71 years.

- ‘Tehzibul-tehzib’, one of the most well-known books on the life and reliability of the narrators of the Sunnah reports that according to Yaqub ibn Shaibah: “Narratives reported by Hisham are reliable except those that are reported through the people of Iraq.” It further states that Malik ibn Anas objected on those narratives of Hisham which were reported through the people of Iraq. (vol 11, pg 48 – 51)

- ‘Mizanul-ai’tidal,’ another book on the narrators of the traditions of the Prophet (pbuh) reports that when Hisham was old, his memory suffered a lot. (vol 4, pg 301 – 302)

- According to the generally accepted tradition, Aisha (RA) was born about 8 years before Hijrah. But according to another narrative in Bukhari (Kitabul-tafseer), Aisha (RA) is reported to have said that at the time Surah Al-Qamar, the 54th surah of the Qur’aan was revealed, “I was a young girl.” The 54th surah of the Qur’aan was revealed 9 years before Hijrah. According to this tradition, Aisha (RA) had not only been born before the revelation of the referred surah, but was actually a young girl (jariyah), not an infant (sibyah) at that time. Obviously, if this narrative is held to be true, it is in clear contradiction with the narratives reported by Hisham ibn’urwah. I see absolutely no reason that after the comments of the experts on the narratives of Hisham ibn’urwah, why we should not accept this narrative to be more accurate.

- According to a number of narratives, Aisha (RA) accompanied the Muslims in the battle of Badr and Uhud. Furthermore, it is also reported in books of Hadeeth and history that no one under the age of 15 years was allowed to take part in the battle of Uhud. All boys below 15 years of age were sent back. Aisha’s (RA) participation in the battle of Badr and Uhud clearly indicate that she was not 9 or 10 years old at that time. After all, women used to accompany men to the battle fields to help them, not to be a burden on them.

- According to almost all the historians, Asma, the elder sister of Aisha was 10 years older than Aisha. It is reported in ‘Tari’bul-Tehzib’ as well as ‘Al-bidayah wa’l-nihayah’ that Asma died in 73 Hijrah when she was almost 100 years old. Now, obviously if Asma was 100 years old in 73 Hijrah, she must have been 27 or 28 years old at the time of Hijrah. And if Asma was 27 or 28 years old at the time of Hijrah, Aisha must have been 17 or 18 years old at that time. Thus, Aisha (RA), if she got married in 1 AH or 2 AH, was 18 to 20 years old.

- Tabari in his treatise on Islamic history, while mentioning Abu Bakr, reports that Abu Bakr had 4 children and all 4 were born during the Jahiliyah (pre-Islamic) period. Obviously, if Aisha was born in the period of Jahiliyah, she could not have been less than 14 years in 1 AH .. the time she most likely got married.

- According to Ibn Hisham, the historian, Aisha (RA) accepted Islam quite sometime before Umar bin Khattab. This shows that Aisha became a Muslim during the first year of Islam. While, if the narrative of Aisha’s marriage at 7 years of age is held to be true, Aisha could not have been born during the first year of Islam.

- Tabari has also reported that at the time Abu Bakr planned on migrating to Habshah (8 years before Hijrah), he went to Mutam with whose son Aisha was engaged, and asked him to take Aisha in his house as his son’s wife. Mutam refused because Abu Bakr had embraced Islam, and subsequently his son’s engagement with Aisha was terminated. Now, if Aisha was only 7 years old at the time of her marriage, she could not have been born at the time Abu Bakr decided on migrating to Habshah. On the basis of this report it seems only reasonable to assume that Aisha (RA) had not only been born 8 years before Hijrah, but was also a young lady, quite prepared for marriage.

- According to a narrative reported by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, after the death of Khadijah (RA), when Khaulah came to the Prophet (Pbuh) advising him to marry again, the Prophet asked her regarding the choices she had in her mind. Khaulah said: “You can marry a virgin (bikr) or a divorcee (thayyib).” When the Prophet (pbuh) asked who the virgin was, Khaulah proposed Aisha’s name. All those who know the Arabic language are aware that the word ‘bikr’ in Arabic is not used for an immature 9-year-old girl. The correct word for a playful little girl, as stated earlier is ‘Jariyah.’ ‘Bikr’ on the other hand, is used for an unmarried lady, and obviously a 9-year-old is not a “lady.”

- According to ibn Hajar, Fatimah was 5 years older than Aisha. Fatimah is reported to have been born when the Prophet (pbuh) was 35 years old. Thus, even if this information is taken to be correct, Aisha could by no means be less than 14 years old at the time of Hijrah, and 15 or 16 years old at the time of her marriage.

These are some of the major points that go against accepting the commonly known narrative regarding Aisha’s (RA) age at the time of her marriage.

From the ISLAMIC REVIEW:

(1) The well-known historian ibn Jareer al-Tabari writes at page 50 of volume 4 of his ‘Book of History’ : “Abu Bakr married two ladies in the days of Jahiliya. Fateelah, daughter of Abd al-Aza was the first from whom Abdullah and Asma were born. Umm-i-Rooman was the second, from whom Abd al-Rahman and Aisha were born. All 4 children of Abu Bakr were born in the days of ignorance (Jahiliyah, i.e. pre-Islamic days) from the above-named two ladies.

(2) It is a well-known fact of history that Abu Bakr’s son Abd al-Rahman fought against the Muslims in the battle of Badr. His age at that time was 21-22 years, and although he was older than Aisha, there is no evidence to show that the difference between their ages was more than 3 or 4 years. This fact lends support to the view that Aisha (RA) was born 4 or 5 years before the Call.

(3) The author of the well-known collection of Hadeeth ‘Mishkat al-Masabeeh,’ Sheik Waheed-ud-Deen writes in his renowned book ‘Ahmal fi Asma ‘ al-Rijjal’: “At the time of the consummation of her marriage, Sayedah Aisha’s age was not less than 18-19 years.”

All the above quotations give ample refutation to the common misconception that Aisha’s age at the time of her Nikah was six years and at the time of her marriage only nine years. In the opinion of all perceptive historians and scholars, neither was it an Arab tradition to give away girls in marriage below 12 years of age, nor did the Prophet marry Aisha at such a young age. The people of Arabia did not object to this marriage because it never happened in the manner it has been narrated. If Muslim scholars of the present era deem fit to make an objective research instead of beating the old track, they will find ample material in the pages of history to arrive at the correct age of Aisha (RA) during the time of her marriage.

May Allah (Subhan Wa’Tala) continue to help us confirm authentic knowledge.

And Allah (Subhan Wa’Tala) is the source of truth. Allah-o-Alim.

The Story of Burseesah

There were three men from Bani Israel who were called to fight for the sake of Allah. They accepted the call, but they had concerns for their sister as she would be left behind with no-one to look after her. After some discussion, they agreed that the best place to leave her would be with the most trusted person in town.

This was a pious man called Burseesah, who lived in a sanctuary and devoted his entire life in the worship of Allah. They came to Burseesah and said to him, "O Burseesah. We know you to be a pious and trustworthy man. We have been enlisted to fight for the sake of Allah and we want to leave our sister with you. O Burseesah! We trust no one else in town except you. Please take care of our sister."

Burseesah immediately said, "AoothoBillah! (I seek refuge in Allah) Get away from me! I have sworn to spend my time devoting it to the worship of Allah! I do not want to deal with these issues and be burdened with looking after someone"

The three men said to him, "O Burseesah! We have no where else to take her! We can’t leave her with anyone else and we don't trust anyone else. Please take care of our sister!"

Shaytaan heard the discussion, and came to Burseesah. "Burseesah..." The waswaas [evil whisperings] began. "Burseesah if you don't look after her, she might be left with someone who is not trustworthy! You have to take this responsibility"

Burseesah listened and finally agreed to look after her. He told the brothers to leave her in a separate house so not to distract him from his acts of worship. They left her there, said goodbye and went to jihad.

Burseesah would continue his acts of worship as normal, and during the day he would leave food on his doorstep so the woman would have to leave the house to collect the food. This also ensured they never saw one another and Bursesah never even left his place of worship.

Time passed by.

Shaytaan came to Burseesah.

"Burseesah...” he whispered, "You can't leave the food on your doorstep! As she is leaving the house someone might see her by herself. All alone and venerable and take advantage of her. Rather than her leave her house, you go to her house and drop off the food on her doorstep."

Burseesah made the decision that this was the right thing to do, and followed the bait that Shaytaan masked in a cover of righteousness. So during the day Burseesah would leave his worship, leave his place of worship, go to the house and leave the food on her doorstep.

This happened for a while and with the trap just being set, Shaytaan moved in for the next step.

"Burseeeeesah..." the whispers came again. ”Burseeesah...you are now leaving the food on her doorstep, but still this is not good. She still has to open the door and collect the food. Someone might still see her and she is so beautiful. She is VERY beautiful"

This servant of Allah, who never saw this woman started to be tempted by the whispers from Shaytaan about her beauty.

"Burseesah, her beauty is intoxicating and if someone sees her they may try something. You have to leave the food INSIDE her house. You don't have to look at her. Just knock on the door, and hand her the food as she opens the door."

Burseesah saw no harm in this. After all, it would stop people from seeing her. More deception covered in righteousness.

So again, Burseesah would leave his worship, leave his place of worship, go to the house and knock on her door to hand her the food.

Time passed by again. Shaytaan remained patient before executing his next plan.

Shaytaan came again.

"Burseeesah...you can’t leave this poor woman all alone. Without any company. No one is speaking to her. She's lonely Burseesah. Just talk to her. There’s no harm in saying salaam and asking how she is. You can talk to her from behind the door...you don’t have to see her...just talk from outside."

He liked the idea and when he would bring her the food he would talk to her behind the door while she was in her room. They would talk for hours every day and the relationship began to get stronger.

Shaytaan found it easier and easier to drag him into the next step. "Burseeesah.....Burseesah....you can't just sit behind the door. You know each other well enough to be in the same room now. Just sit in the same room and speak to her. You don't have to look at her. Just sit in the same room."

Burseesah began to follow the advice of Shaytaan. Everytime they met, the talk became more intimate as they began getting closer...and closer...and closer.

...He would hold her hand...

...The kiss came a few days later...

Eventually...they made zinaa [fornication] with each other.

"Ohh what have I done" Burseesah said as he realised his mistake.

--From being a slave of Allah...to becoming a fornicator.--

But the story did not end there.

From that night, the woman became pregnant. Nine months later she delivered a baby boy.

The familiar whispers started again as Shaytaan flowed through Burseesah's veins like blood.

"Burseeesaah...when her brothers come back and find out their sister has a child in zinaa, you are going to be in trouble! There is only one way to solve this problem. Burseesah........you have to kill the baby! Get rid of the evidence!"

Grief and anxiety ran through Burseesah's mind as he listened to the whispers of Shaytaan. He did what he heard and killed the baby.

"Ohhhh Burseesah. Do you think this woman will keep this a secret after you killed her own child?? Nooo. Burseesah.....the only thing to do now is to kill her!"

Burseesah then killed the woman and buried both mother and child under the house and covered it with a rock.

--From being a slave of Allah...to becoming a murderer.--

The three brothers returned and went to greet their sister. She was no where to be found. They went to the house of Burseesah and asked him, "Where is our sister?"

"She has passed away" he said as he pointed to a fake grave. The brothers were saddened by the loss, and made du'a for her.

That night when they went to sleep, Shaytaan came to them in their dreams and told them all what had happened.

"Burseesah has lied to you! Burseesah killed your sister! Burseesah made zinaa with her! She is buried under the rock inside the house."

As they all woke up in the morning, and talked about their dream, they began relating the same dream and thought there must be some truth in it.

They first dug up the grave Burseesah pointed to and found no body. They stormed to Burseesah's house and demanded to know what had happened to their sister. One of them saw the rock in the house and uncovered it, where they saw their sister and her child.

"What has happened to our sister?!" The eldest screamed. They forced Burseesah to disclose the secret of what happened and Burseesah told them everything.

Burseesah was taken to court where he confessed everything to the King. The King sentenced Burseesah to be executed. As they dragged him to his death, fear overcame Burseesah.

For the first time during this whole incident, Shaytaan appeared before Burseesah and said to him, "Oh Burseesah! Listen! Look at me! I was the one who was whispering to you since this whole thing started! I am Shaytaan!"

Burseesah's fear grew as the blade for his execution was brought!

"Now I can get you out of all this trouble. I was the one who put you in it, and I can get you out of it!"

"Oh Shaytaan, what should I do?!" Burseesah cried!

With an evil grin, Shaytaan said, "Make sujood to me. I am Shaytaan and I will save you! Bow down and prostrate to me!" Burseesah fell down in sujood to Shaytaan and as soon as he did this, Shaytaan ran away!

.....and Burseesah was executed.

--From being a servant of Allah, bowing down to Allah...to becoming a servant to Shaytaan...bowing down to Shaytaan. –

-- From Imaan...to the worst type of kufr - bowing down to Shaytaan! --

Who could ever imagine a servant of Allah making sujood to Shaytaan!?

Imagine if Shaytaan came to Burseesah at the beginning and said "Burseesah make sujood to me", would Burseesah do it? NO!

If Shaytaan came to Burseesah at the beginning and said "commit murder", would he do? NO! If Shaytaan came to Burseesah at the beginning and said "commit zinaa", would he do it? NO!

But Shaytaan knows the game! He's been playing his tricks since the time of Adam. Classical method of misleading people. Through step by step deception. This is how Shaytaan pulls at your feet and deceives you. So even if something may SEEM to be like an insignificant sin / action, be careful. It might be the start of a trap.

Allah tells us “O you who believe! Do not follow the footsteps of the Shaytaan, and whoever follows the footsteps of the Shaytaan, then surely he bids the doing of indecency and evil”
[24.21]
